I think the perception of Kelly a year ago...

...was very high, except among a subset of ND fans who wanted a more accomplished (read: "NC winning") coach to jump ship and come to ND. I know I've said it before, by my Michigan friends were really bummed last year because they saw Kelly being their coach right about now if he hadn't taken the ND job. They figured Rod for a year like this one and then a firing that would have allowed Kelly to step in and take Rod's players and actually turn them into a productive team. And my friends from Stanford, USC, UCLA, BC, Washington, etc., all believed last year that ND scored big in getting Kelly.
