I'm not sure how to explain his first two seasons
But his 2006 season impressed me. He only went 7-5 (Kelly won the bowl game), but four of the losses were to Ohio State (12-1), Virginia Tech (10-3), Louisville (12-1) and WVU (11-2), all on the road. And he comfortably beat 9-4 USF and 11-2 Rutgers. I think a fair reading is that Kelly did great work at UC, but that Dantonio set a pretty good table for him in terms of toughness and discipline.
Dantonio was also considered one of Tressel's best assistants, and he was the coordinator when they won the national title.
