I think the sanctions were a bigger factor than you seem to think.
But more importantly, he was fired from the NFL. Saban packed up and left volutarily. I think any sort of "vindication" motive would be much stronger for Carroll. And I don't think money will be the issue, as I think Saban was being paid quite well at Miami.
