Maybe this is too shallow

But I do think there is a uniqueness to soccer that you don't find in a number of traditional "American" sports, namely football and basketball.

Acquiring skills and tools at a young age in soccer offer a competitive advantage over the life of a player. In football or basketball, there are biological forces that take over and being the fastest at 8 YO or even 8th grade won't matter come your junior season. Basketball too. Growing 6 inches your sophomore year can change a trajectory.

Baseball is a little different, but we tend to Americanize development similarly across all sports.
