Freeman can couch it in injury
"Riley was a little dinged up, but we didn't realize the extent of his injury until Sunday. He is a tough kid and wants to be out there on the field with his teammates, but we can't put him in a position where he is limited on the field. Carr/Angeli will start against Purdue."
The only thing Freeman loses in this situation is the ability to insert Leonard in specific packages. Leonard might be useful in a goal line package where there are no downfield throw available anyway, for example.
