I love this line

And I don't want my kid to lose out on the thrill that is scored competition just because some parents don't instill the proper values in their kid and/or are afraid their kid is going to be unduly sad if he loses.

As if by focusing on actually learning a game and holding off on keeping official score until the kids are 12 your kid will somehow (a) not keep score in her/his head and be happy when he wins, and (b) stop playing sports before she/he gets that thrill.
