No, that is people keeping score

Turning it into a faceless metaphysical fact not tied to the decisions of people is a mistake. It is a mistake because all it does is hide practices from possible critical evaluation (is keeping score the best way to achieve an outcome in this case?). If it is just the way the world is, we never have to think about it. It just is.

That isn't to say that there are places where competition is good. It is just to say that the goodness of it should stand on its own merits. It should be something we can demonstrate. Not something we assume as metaphysical truth.
