He didn't veer left until Sanders/Warren and their ilk came out for him and influenced his policy positions.

The reason he was such an attractive candidate was due to the perception that he resonated with white working class males. Some of his earliest endorsements and support came from the electrical workers, who became increasingly concerned about his tack left.
