I applaud Penn State for doing the hard thing. But the timing is terrible.

ND’s approach was better: bring in coordinators you can promote, size them up, and have a reasonable transition.

Penn State’s not promoting either of their coordinators. I am not sure there’s another one out there that’s a no-brainer hire like Smart was for Georgia. Why go this route if you don’t have a replacement solidly lined up?

Which is why I expect a Matt Rhule hiring announcement shortly. I don’t see that move being worth the angst, but, as we know, having a RKG kinda coach can be immensely frustrating.
