I don't get the value in doing it now

I am very much a "what should be done eventually must be done immediately" kind of person, but there is no upside to firing him now.

What is the worst case for Penn State? He rallies the team and goes 9-3 with wins over Ohio State and Indiana? At that point, would you really want to fire him? And even if you do, you work is out as a parting of the ways/needing a change/etc. They can always pay him off to make it sound mutual with part of the money they'd save by delaying the firing decision.

Or maybe the worst case for Penn State is losing out and therefore losing recruits? Well, guess what? Losing out is probably more likely without him (maybe not) and the recruits are already gone.

I guess they can start the coaching search earlier by firing him, but I don't really see upsides to firing him now.
