I've seen the Ashland bus lanes idea before

It is a horrible idea. Ashland is a main north/south artery and preventing left turns and restricting traffic on Ashland in both directions will create enormous amounts of congestion.

I also suspect that most of these ideas look nice from above, but there won't really be the riders there to justify them. Chicago has a hub-and-spoke transit system because a lot of jobs are concentrated in the loop. These "side routes" won't have the ridership to keep themselves economically viable.

I do like the Brown-Blue line extension. There might be enough northsiders headed to Ohare to justify this.
