I agree Sanderson can work, try Mistborn.

In the retro science fiction world, Zelazny's "Chronicles of Amber" is solid.

Heinlein's juvenile series. I started with Red Planet and was hooked. He's controversial these days though.

Joe Abercrombie wrote a juvenile series, the "Half a King" aka the Shattered Sea, that was good.

Naomi Novik's Temeraire is interesting.

All of the above are PG-rated. I read most of them at about this age, though moved quickly on to Donaldson and Heinlein's adult work.
