We live in a Chicago two flat. We bought about ten years ago and moved my wife's mother into the upstairs unit about five years ago.

Four years ago, my mother in law was bored and bought a dog off Craigslist. Mutt, mostly black lab and hound we think. Had a tough upbringing (came to us with heartworm) but generally robust dog.

Dog is 85 lbs now. He is more than my MIL can handle so we have taken him on. Generally a month or so of a very happy dog until tonight. My son (6 years old) went to hug him from behind while he laid on the bed and the dog snapped at my son's face. No contact, no blood, etc but it was a fierce guarding action. I will add he also can't be taken to a dog park because his generally friendly disposition notwithstanding, he is a snarly, resource-guarding bastard once treats, food, toys get involved.

I now want this dog out of the house and gone from my family. Everyone else is telling me I'm a cold hearted monster for that and it was just a single slip. I don't know anything about dogs so would love any and all perspectives here. Thanks in advance
