A few random things:

Museums:

Musee Rodin, Paris: the Louvre and Musee d'Orsay are givens, but this is worth it for the Gates of Hell alone.

Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin: skip the Guinness tour and come here instead.

The Smithsonian Museums, Washington, DC: the Natural History was my favorite as a kid, and the American History is my favorite now, but I can't limit it to one.

Food:

Mashed Potatoes at Atelier Joel Robuchon, Paris: the single best thing I have ever tasted.

Crab Grilled Cheese at Beecher's in Pike Place Market, Seattle: It pains me, as a Maryland boy, but this tops every blue crab dish I've had.

Peperoni Pizza at Star Tavern, Orange, NJ: better than anything you'll find on the other side of the river.

Cultural:

A show at the 930 Club, Washington, DC: my favorite venue in the world.

City Lights Books, San Francisco: a great bookstore and a must see for anyone who read Kerouac and Ginsberg as a teenager.

A play on Broadway: because everyone should experience live drama, as performed by professionals, at least once. (Related: everyone should see a competent production of a Shakespeare play before they die.)
