Marcus had to come out in late December to shut down NFL interest. The 2 teams that indicated serious interest in Freeman were the Titans and Giants. Freeman had to put out some kind of statement because the program needed to know the direction. Recruits needed to know who the staff would be. So he made a declarative announcement.

2 weeks later was when Tomlin stepped down. I think if Tomlin had stepped down in December we would have been dealing with a real situation.
