On the 90% thing, I don't know the Carnegie Commission but it would seem to be a reasonable source:

I've seen others that are similar.
Agreed it varies by discipline. I would argue, however, that several recent/expanding departments are by their nature going to skew liberal. Pretty much any (race/ethnicity) Studies or Gender Studies department. Sociology, which was that way at ND even back in the day.
