What Tenuta can do that Brown couldn't...
was he can afford, from a career perspective, to make mistakes. And he wont make a lot that a newer DC would make anyway, but these days a lot of his mad-scientist abilities are built on a foundation of great success. Sometimes he might make a nutso call that gets beat, but most, even among ND fans, will recognize that of all the people who could be making insane blitz calls, Tenuta is the guy you want making them.
Brown still has rep to build, and as a result, might have played his cards a little tighter than Tenuta will.
I also think Brown has a lot to gain here. This further builds his resume in the direction of HC. We'll be lucky if we get to keep Brown more than a couple more years. If Haywood could get a HC gig like he did, then I suspect Brown wont have any trouble getting some interviews in 2010/11.
