That makes sense
Sucks to lose out on a talented kid, but let's look back a ways and see a situation where it ran the opposite.
There was a supremely talented HS quarterback who wanted to come to ND. We took him even though our offense really did not mesh with his talents and we had few players around him who could really be counted on to exploit his talents. After a redshirt season and two years of running our standard offense to minimal success, we tried to tweak our offense around him and even gave that tweaked offense an Irish-sounding name (just for the fun of it). The guy left ND with a whole lot of passing records due in large part to him playing for four years and ND trying to make things work, but his career never really took off and ND never really reached the heights that we had reached just before he arrived, when we had QBs who could run the offense the coach wanted to run.
So I look at this kid, who has specific talents and wants to play in a specific system, and I wish him luck in his career knowing that he's better off elsewhere. It's too bad that ND as an institution won't get another human being as great as Ron Powlus, but from a purely football perspective the kid and ND are probably both better off.
