I'd love to see a quantification of the value that college athletes receive. At $50k per year, just the 85 scholarship football players at ND are getting over $4M per year, and that doesn't count the number of other scholarships that football subsidizes.
Back of the envelope, if there are 120 programs with 85 players at an average tuition/room & board of $20k, that's $204M per year of benefit to the athletes. Not to mention that of the 10k or so college football players, probably only around 5% or so will make any money as a professional football player. Even if 75% of the athletes "throw their education away" there is a pretty strong argument to keep college football scholarships around.
That is a lucid, intelligent, well thought-out objection.
