Ty Isaac committed to USC

Boo.

Isn't he 6'3?

by Pat (Moco), Bar, Urban Chophouse Short North, Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 13:54 (5138 days ago) @ Jim (fisherj08)

That's HUGE for a running back, isn't it?

Yes.

I would think he has a higher potential for injury with those gangly legs. It's also harder to get low and avoid the punishing hit at that height. You almost have to be a bruiser type (Eddie George, Jacobs, etc.)

Still sucks that we missed him - I'll take all the guys we can get with his talent. And of course, we're a long way from February.

It's certainly outside the norm

by BPH, San Diego, Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 14:52 (5138 days ago) @ Pat (Moco)

Based on a quick check at Pro Football Reference, the only prominent RBs I could come up with who are in that range were Dickerson (6-3), Eddie George (6-3) and Brandon Jacobs (6-4). There are a bunch who were 6-2: Jim Brown, Marcus Allen, Franco Harris, OJ, Riggins.

Same as Eddie George

Although I don't know if he was that big at the end of his junior year in HS.

Better USC than Michigan. USC always has elite skill guys a

they were always going to end up with one or two top RBs. That they landed one who otherwise would have gone to Michigan (and made Michigan significantly better) only helps us.

To bad

I would have liked to have seen that 'big body' type of running back incorporated into our offense. He would have been a terrific inside runner to complement other aspects of the spread. I sense though, that he didn't see his skill set as a great match with Kelly's offensive scheme.

Hopefully Mahone can fill that role...

by BPH, San Diego, Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 09:16 (5139 days ago) @ Bill

until 2016 after redshirting this season.

But Bill...

by scriptcomesfirst @, Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 08:54 (5139 days ago) @ Bill

He is not a terrific inside runner. Watch the films available. He's yet another big back who thinks he's a finesse guy.

So were Jonas and Robert. They eventually got the message.

Those guys were also both under 6' tall.

"Big back" doesn't really mean what it used to mean.

I would argue that there was too small of a

sampleas ample size on Hughes to consider him a rousing success, and that Jonas was as much or more of a speed back as he was power. Jonas has a ton more burst than Isaac unless my eyes are deceiving me.

Doesn't move the needle for me at all

I'm always a fan of believing that you should expect anything and everything until signing day. After this year's circus, even more so.

That just means he's still in-play.

by Savage, Around Ye Olde Colonial College, Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 07:52 (5139 days ago) @ Jim (fisherj08)

If he had committed to Michigan, I think it'd have been a done deal. But committing to the program all the way across the country, there's lots of time for his family to pressure him about going so far away.

Which isn't to say I think we'll get him -- but I think it bodes better than if he were committed to UM.

We're not going to get him

by BPH, San Diego, Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 08:07 (5139 days ago) @ Savage

We were running a distant third. I think Isaac has made it clear that he wants to be the primary back in a pro style offense, similar to Savon Huggins two classes ago. But I'm still glad he picked USC because I think Michigan will have a harder time replacing him with another elite back.

That makes sense

by Greg, seemingly ranch, Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 08:42 (5139 days ago) @ BPH

Sucks to lose out on a talented kid, but let's look back a ways and see a situation where it ran the opposite.

There was a supremely talented HS quarterback who wanted to come to ND. We took him even though our offense really did not mesh with his talents and we had few players around him who could really be counted on to exploit his talents. After a redshirt season and two years of running our standard offense to minimal success, we tried to tweak our offense around him and even gave that tweaked offense an Irish-sounding name (just for the fun of it). The guy left ND with a whole lot of passing records due in large part to him playing for four years and ND trying to make things work, but his career never really took off and ND never really reached the heights that we had reached just before he arrived, when we had QBs who could run the offense the coach wanted to run.

So I look at this kid, who has specific talents and wants to play in a specific system, and I wish him luck in his career knowing that he's better off elsewhere. It's too bad that ND as an institution won't get another human being as great as Ron Powlus, but from a purely football perspective the kid and ND are probably both better off.

Until your last paragraph . . .

by Glass, Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 08:54 (5139 days ago) @ Greg

I thought that you were talking about Wade Smith.

I could have gone another way...

by Greg, seemingly ranch, Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 09:00 (5139 days ago) @ Glass

...and had the QB marry the daughter of one of television's most beloved basketball broadcasters.

This is not sour grapes, but I think this kid...

by scriptcomesfirst @, Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 08:11 (5139 days ago) @ BPH

Screams bust. He's not that fast or elusive, and I think he'll take a lot of big hits because he's a big target. He doesn't run with good pad level like a power back should. For me, Green has been the kid I've wanted in this class above all others.

Completely agree.

by KGB, Belly o. the Beast, Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 09:25 (5139 days ago) @ scriptcomesfirst

He's obviously a great athlete, but I think he's already outgrown the running back position. If he can be sold on a switch to, say, OLB, great, but I have a feeling that's something that won't come until halfway into his college career once he's been given a fair shot on offense. I'd rather have Green, and it's not even close.

Green is a better player, and a better fit for our offense

by BPH, San Diego, Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 09:40 (5139 days ago) @ KGB

Looking at his cohort, it's a wonder he's not a 5-star kid.

But FSU has either pulled even or ahead, and if we miss on Green, it gets a little dicey at the RB position. On the other hand, if we can avoid using Carlisle, Russell and Mahone this season, we'll be in great shape depth-wise going forward.

Marc Tyler-esque?

by KA123 @, Manhattan Beach, Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 08:14 (5139 days ago) @ scriptcomesfirst

It always sucks to lose Illinois' best running back. But I'd much rather have him in South Central than in Ann Arbor.

There has been a pretty high washout rate in Trojanland when welcoming in supposedly elite Midwestern talent.

USC's track record with running backs lately...

by FunkDoctorSpock, Your Nightmares, B* tches, Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 09:01 (5139 days ago) @ KA123

isn't what most people would think. Sure, it's better than ND's, in terms of players drafted, but that's damning with very faint praise. Since the 2003 recruiting class:

Reggie Bush - 1st round pick. 3,176 rushing yards, 23 TDs rushing, 13 receiving
Lendale White - 2nd round. 2,349 rushing yards, 24 TDs
Chauncey Washington - 7th round
Kenny Ashley - DNQ
Allen Bradford - 6th round (switched to LB in the NFL)
CJ Gable - UFA
Stanley Havili - 7th round
Stafon Johnson - UFA
Emmanuel Moody - transferred to Florida
Broderick Greein - transferred to Arkansas
Joe McKnight - 4th round. 323 yards, 0 TDs rushing.
Marc Tyler - UFA
Curtis McNeal - 5th year senior at SC, starting tailback
DJ Shoemate - transferred to UCONN
Simione Vehikite - left team, facing felony charges
Dillon Baxter - transferred to SDSU, thrown off team
DJ Morgan - 3rd team tailback coming out of spring
Soma Vainuku - 1st team fullback coming out of spring
Javorious Allen - 3rd team tailback
Amir Carlisle - transferred to ND
Tre Madden - switched from LB, tore ACL
Nelson Agholor
Jahleel Pinner

I'm stretching your timeline a little

by Chris, Raleigh, NC, Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 09:17 (5139 days ago) @ FunkDoctorSpock

but Ryan Grant, an undrafted Free Agent has had a better NFL career than all of them.

Rushing yards 4,016
Average rushing yards 4.3
Rushing TDs 25
Receptions 92
Receiving yards 726
Receiving TDs 2

Getting working up on May 15th seems like a complete and utter waste of time.

Note: That's a lesson learned over time.

Oh, and Julius Jones...

had the best numbers of them all!

RUSHING: 5,068 yards, 22 TDs

EDIT:

And, for good measure, here aer Justin Fargas's NFL numbers

RUSHING: 3,369 yards, 10 TDs
