Now driving the Malik Zaire bandwagon

I've gotten to be pretty good buddies with Yogi Roth, who now helps run the Elite 11 QB camps and used to coach QBs at USC under Carroll. Good guy who was absolutely raving about Zaire.

Writing up a story with quotes for Monday (blogging on the weekend is not happening this offseason, unless there's an arrest or a recruiting commitment), but he thinks this kid is going to be a pure stud.

Yogi grew up a huge ND fan. Was recruited and came up in the LoVecchio/Jared Clark era but played at Pitt. Recruited Dayne while he was coaching at SC, and had a look at Golson and Kiel in the Elite 11 stuff the last two years.

Likes Zaire better than any of the guys he's seen since his era.

Have some good quotes from him that are pretty positive, but people definitely shouldn't be sleeping on this kid -- especially from a passing perspective.

how tall is he, really?

I'm no Steve Clarkson but I caught some film of Zaire

at the Columbus invitational when he was going up against UM QB commit Shame Morris (Camp MVP). Tools wise he has everything that you want. His issue is he's often high on his throws. But I tend to think this is more of a correctable technical problem than an inability.

I like how he holds the ball up by his shoulders during his

drop and throughout his motion. Both Tommy and Dayne developed bad habits in that regard. It was one of the things that pissed me off most about Molnar.

I prefer, and teach, my QB's to hold the ball

Around mid chest. Makes for a more natural motion.

I do agree that both Tommy & Dayne held the ball in poor position the majority of the time. Inexcusable that Molnar never corrected that issue.

I keep having flashbacks to the Ryan Kerrigan forced

fumble in the Purdue game two years ago. Perfect example.

And there are so many photos of Rees and Crist holding the ball around mid-abdomen and in one hand. It kills me.

I'm no Kelly Clarkson, but...

I think this kid has "break away" speed.

See what I did there? Also, I do not hook up.

The trouble with love is my life would suck without ND.

I hate myself for that. Self-imposed ban for 12 hours.

You'll survive, Pat.

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Just walk away.

Elite 11 did not exactly produce glowing reviews on Gunner Kiel. I don't know how much of that was Trent Dilfer's opinion, but I'd be interested to hear your friends review of Kiel if he was around for last year's competition.

Good news on Zaire! Thanks.
