Feb. 01, 2012 8:42 p.m. - by Glenn Guilbeau - Miles takes shot at QB Kiel's switch to ND
Coach Les Miles threw a bullet at top-ranked QB Gunner Kiel, who committed to LSU on Dec. 27 but enrolled at Notre Dame in January, staying closer to his Columbus, Ind., home. "He did not necessarily have the chest and the ability to leave a program close to home, just so you know," Miles said at the Bayou Bash recruiting party.

It takes a chest to leave a program close to home?

Chuck is starring for the program on Neptune.

I also found it ironic...

given the number of boys playing at LSU who have momma within an easy car ride from Baton Rouge.

Too many shots to Les' head

What we thought was coaching genius, may just end up being lucky moves by an idiot.

What purpose does it serve to insult a kid who went to another school?

Other than, ya know---being a dick.

Kelly took a similar swipe at DG today

Although he didn't refer to him by name.

Kelly's statement wasn't really a shot at JG

by KelleyCook @, Thursday, February 02, 2012, 07:22 (5243 days ago) @ Jay

I took it as more of generic statement he told himself to rationalize lost recruits:

"I used to have a saying about players like that and that was I'd rather play against him for four games than with him for four years"

Les, on the other hand called Kiel out as a Momma's Boy.

A couple questions

by DCT, Wednesday, February 01, 2012, 19:58 (5243 days ago) @ Jay

And I haven't read or watched enough to know...

When/how did Greenberry tell Kelly he was switching? Did he lie about it?

And, did Gunner do the same thing? or did Gunner just change his mind?

I don't mind DG changing his mind, provided he at least informed the ND coaches he was switching.

If he did that, and Kelly still called him out, then Kelly acted like a douche.

A couple of answers

When/how did Greenberry tell Kelly he was switching? Did he lie about it?

Greenberry never told ND anything. According to Kelly, ND didn't know about the switch until Greenberry's HS coach told them this morning that Greenberry signed with Houston.

Allegedly ND spoke to Greenberry on Tuesday night and he didn't mention anything to them about being unsure, so they went to bed thinking that he would sign with ND on Wed.

And, did Gunner do the same thing? or did Gunner just change his mind?

I really don't know about Kiel's situation w/r/t when he spoke to LSU. One difference is that Kiel defected 3 weeks before NLOID and LSU was able to recover with Jeremy Liggins. Greenberry blindsided ND the morning that letters were being sent into fax machines w/o warning and without time to line up a replacement.

I don't mind DG changing his mind, provided he at least informed the ND coaches he was switching.

It doesn't appear that he did. He tweeted something yesterday to the effect of "shocking the world", so he obviously knew that he wasn't going to ND yesterday when he spoke to people at ND and said he was solid. Then when the time came to inform ND he had his HS coach do it.

If he did that, and Kelly still called him out, then Kelly acted like a douche.

I don't know how I'd handle it but if I were Kelly I'd be damn well pissed over how Greenberry handled the situation. If DG wanted to go to Houston, fine. But it appears that he took it all for a game and wanted today to be about him, so he pulled this surprise on NLOID and screwed ND in the process. If he had told Kelly that he was having questions or seconds thoughts as recently as last Fri then ND could have brought in a recruit or two just in case. As it was Greenberry told ND he was solid, ND cancelled some planned trips by WR prospects, then Greenberry "shocks the world" and gets his 15 minutes, and ND is left standing there with a giant hole in their class.

DB also told Tee last night

so he didn't wake up and suddenly change his mind. He apparently lied to the ND coaches at least once (yesterday).

In addition, I don't know that I'd call Kelly's comment a "shot" - certainly not to the level of Les's shot at Gunner, which was effectively questioning his manhood.

Miles is playing to his base

while shamelessly attempting to deflect all blame away from himself and his staff for LSU's late recruiting collapse.

It wasn't his fault that LSU lost the #1 QB in the nation. Nah, it was the kids fault because he didn't have the "chest" to come down here amongst us southern men. I even bet that "chest" is a southern colloquialism that Miles used to show the natives that (wink, wink) despite being from Ohio, he's really of them.

I bet the faithful just lapped that line up. Les ain't dumb.

Threw a bullet?

Weird phrase.

Almost as strange as not having "the chest" to leave. Suitcases and boxes usually work for travel, although I imagine Les meant "heart."
