Layton Von Brandt, #5OT & #70 overall, committing tomorrow.

ND looks good here.
Last ND offensive lineman from Delaware that I remember was Luke Petitgout.
Hopefully, history repeats itself here.

Apparently it's Auburn

It's wild to me

that even in the NIL era with more structure around the decision-making process, there are still so many kids who make bizarre decisions like this. You really couldn't be any further to the opposite end of the spectrum from ND than...Auburn. Just a rudderless, unstable loser of a program. And if the deal seems to good to be true, it probably is. See ya in the funny papers, kid.

He was also very enamored with Franklin

When he was at Penn State. Snake oil salesmen are successful for a reason I guess.

He could at least sell Troutwein at PSU.

Another very good OL coach. Auburn is going to "bronny" his brother for, what, a year or maybe two? Blood is blood, but this feels like a really shortsighted decision. Particularly in the portal era where players ascending if they prove themselves at a lesser program is so common. Always plenty of opportunity for mobility.

if your final two college choices are ND vs Auburn

by Jay, San Diego, Monday, May 18, 2026, 08:35 (6 days ago) @ KGB

something is amiss in your decision tree.

This is not a slam on Auburn fwiw. I just cannot picture two more opposite programs and schools.

I wonder how much development

by South Shore Line @, Boston, Massachusetts, Monday, May 18, 2026, 09:16 (6 days ago) @ Jay

Deuce Knight and Dante Moore sacrificed to start their careers at two drain circling programs. Alex Golesh seems like good hire, so there's a lot of unknowns there, but Knight and Moore committed to two dead coaches walking.

I guess at QB it might just be the better strategy to take as much money as possible for one year then transfer to where you really want to play. OL might actually be the closest position in roster management. Teams rarely rotate, redshirts are frequent, and development is very important.

Weaseling out of things is important to learn. It's what separates us from the animals… except the weasel.

The decision tree branches probably end in dollar signs

Maybe he just wants the gold?

Wow guess we'll have the money to stay on Simien then

That's a pretty wild recruitment. Assume Auburn dropped a huge offer in his lap very recently.

Wow, That came out of nowhere. B&G reporter is "stunned".

Yeah, Horka was also pretty confident in this one.

But honestly, if there's an area we can absorb a miss or 2 it's on the OL.

Pretty sure he was a silent or as close to it as we get. And

by BillyGoat @, At Thanksgiving with Joe Bethersontin, Monday, May 18, 2026, 10:39 (6 days ago) @ Domer99

close enough that we basically penciled his NIL into our budget, which eliminated Simien. Now, we miss out on a 4* and bizarrely have a "backup plan" who is a 5*.

It'll still be a heavyweight battle to get Simien, regardless of the money.

Sounds like it may come down to ND/A&M.

In which case I like our odds with him well enough, given the family's Catholic faith and focus on academics possibly tipping the scales as a differentiator.

Offered his brother, I think, a 2026 Maine signee

was that the deciding factor?

by Jay, San Diego, Monday, May 18, 2026, 07:29 (7 days ago) @ Publicola

Shades of Josh Atkinson.

Probably other things as well

by Publicola, Monday, May 18, 2026, 08:15 (6 days ago) @ Jay

He almost certainly will get on the field earlier at Auburn and they probably put together a rich NIL deal. But if they offered his brother, I'd have to think that was something he negotiated and was probably the difference.

That will probably round out the OL class

There seem to be mixed reports on whether we'll continue to pursue Albert Simien, though most seem to think the money won't be there to really stick around in that race.

So before Memorial Day, 2027 will be (likely) done at the following spots -

QB
RB
OL
TE

Might throw CB/S in there too, but seems like they'll probably try to grab another guy for the secondary, likely more a safety than a corner.

The rest of the summer will be spent filling out DL and WR, and hoping for some positive traction at LB, which looks like the only spot where we're perhaps lagging behind usual standards. Supposedly this has to do with Bullough being a disappointing recruiter, which is not something I think we heard while he was still on staff.

Anyway, another incredible effort by Freeman and the staff, assuming they can continue to close, and of course hang onto what we've got.
