FU: I don’t know if I got 2 more games in me

by MTIrish, Sunday, May 10, 2026, 11:54 (16 days ago)

It was the best of times it was the bluest of times? Another key injury at the worst possible time. A managerial error which was made right at half time. A massive late goal and VAR, after it’s non-effort in 115’s game yesterday, finally showed up.

Arsenal, you’re gonna kill me.

Hold on to your butts!

by ndroman21, Monday, May 11, 2026, 06:56 (15 days ago) @ MTIrish

Heart in throat 3 times:
1) Fernandez breaks through clean on Raya. What a save from the six yard box
2) Trossard's goal
3) West Ham's equalizer...and then the entire 5 minutes until it was ruled out.

I'm really struggling to understand the backlash on this one. It's a clear foul, and people keep on bringing up incidents where Arsenal blocked the keeper, saying Arsenal gets away with the "same thing", but NONE of them involve a shirt pull OR an arm across OR an arm grab.

More of that Martin Odegaard please! It's going to be interesting to see who plays right back. Mosquera has been generally solid, but you also have Hincapie, MLS, and Calafiori, who are all left footed of course.

Really poor luck that Timber can't get healthy.

The backlash is easy to understand

Pretty much everybody hates VAR, PMGOL, long reviews, set-piece scrums, and chalked--off goals. Here we had all of the above effectively combining to hand the title to a widely detested Arsenal side, while dooming West Ham to relegation, in a manner that feels unfair, even if it was the right call.

FWIW, it was the right call, and Arsenal deserved the win, but after six minutes of almost everything that's wrong with modern football coalescing, you can't blame people for feeling salty.

Why is this Arsenal team widely detested?

by San Pedro @, More than 100 feet from Bob Davies, Monday, May 11, 2026, 09:51 (15 days ago) @ HCE

They haven’t won the league in 20 years.

Because they play ugly, boring football

by HCE, Monday, May 11, 2026, 10:43 (15 days ago) @ San Pedro

Arteta's brand of haramball would make Mourinho blush. I didn't love the Wenger sides, either, but at least they were fun to watch.

Also, a couple title-free decades do not wipe away old enmities. Just ask your local Gooner how badly they wamted Liverpool to win six years ago.

Of course, Arsenal fans should disregard all of the above as sour grapes from digruntled rivals.

But have scored more goals than City

by MTIrish, Tuesday, May 12, 2026, 13:00 (14 days ago) @ HCE

Make it make sense

Arsenal have 68; City have 72, plus a game in hand

by HCE, Tuesday, May 12, 2026, 13:34 (14 days ago) @ MTIrish

City have also scored 56 goals from open play, compared to Arsenal's 38.

In conclusion, Arsenal are boring, but at least they're boring and good. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to prepare myself for 90 more minutes of LFC kicking the ball aimlessly en route to another drab draw.

Hat tip for providing facts to counter my laziness

You think you folks will turn to Xavi after this season? Seems a rebuild is required.

All signs point to Slot coming back

by HCE, Tuesday, May 12, 2026, 14:37 (14 days ago) @ MTIrish

I suppose that could change, particularly if he fails to qualify for the UCL, but all reports say FSG is sticking with him. I can't say I'm thrilled by that--as you've probably noticed, his tactics have been painfully inept this season--but I also think some of Liverpool's most serious issues have been outside his control and/or above his pay grade.

It'll be interesting to see what FSG do in the transfer market, given how many legacy players are exiting (Salah, of course, but also Robertson and maybe Allison), but I don't expect the summer to be all that busy. FSG spent like drunken sailors last year, albeit with dire results, so they seem unlikely to do it again.

Simpsons covered this like 25 years ago.

I believe this was actually rotoscoped from footage of Atletico/Arsenal.

That play typified everything that is wrong the EPL/PGMOL

at the moment. I think the fact that there were numerous fouls, including holding and tackling, that went on before the arm near the neck would really piss me off if I were a Hammers fan.

Arsenal deserve to win the league, but the inconsistency in officiating the past few years has been infuriating.

Far be it from me to defend PGMOL.

by ndroman21, Monday, May 11, 2026, 08:57 (15 days ago) @ Bryan (IrishCavan)

They suck. They've sucked for a long time.

But comparing apples to oranges on this particular call is disingenuous at best.

And I'm not talking about West Ham fans. I'd understand it coming from them. It's pundits and fans from City, Liverpool, United, Chelsea. It's just strange.

I mean, did you see Bernardo Silva's tackle on a corner in the box against Everton? That was a footnote on Reddit.

This play has article upon article calling for rule changes.

I really don't get it.

It was the most consequential VAR decision in league history

by HCE, Monday, May 11, 2026, 10:50 (15 days ago) @ ndroman21

and complaining about VAR is both a global pastime and a cottage industry. Of course people are upset about it.

FWIW, I'm not sure why you care what those of us below you in the table think about it. The league leaders have every right to ignore the peasants who are whining as they grasp for consolation prizes.

We're out of practice.

by ndroman21, Monday, May 11, 2026, 11:09 (15 days ago) @ HCE

And still waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Which it still might.

To be fair

people have been complaining about the shithousery going on in set pieces for a while now. I think HCE nailed it on why there has been a number of folks outraged, especially when this likely sealed the title for Arsenal.

Regarding PGMOL, hell, LFC have lost 2 titles to Citeh, one on an uncalled handball one year and the other an uncalled kick in the chest in the penalty box. Not that I'm still upset.

Not sure why referees have allowed some...

by PMan @, The Banks of the Spokane River, Monday, May 11, 2026, 08:53 (15 days ago) @ Bryan (IrishCavan)

corner kicks to become rugby scrums while, in the same game, whistling a foul for really petty stuff on a corner.

Rugby Scrum?

by Bryan (IrishCavan), Howth Castle and Environs, Monday, May 11, 2026, 09:01 (15 days ago) @ PMan

FWIW, that is a penalty in a real rugby scrum

by HullieAndMikes, Yelling at Sam Cane, Dunedin, Monday, May 11, 2026, 10:51 (15 days ago) @ Bryan (IrishCavan)

Can't bring your opposite to ground either intentionally or not.

Also I know shorthand language is divorced from origin, but it is amusing that people use "scrum" to denote unregulated scenarios of multiple people scrapping/wrestling when the modern scrum (at least since the start of professionalism) is one of the most technical and heavily regulated parts of the game (even I disagree with the dominant French interpretation of it).

The irony here is that the first thing I see on that video..

by ndroman21, Monday, May 11, 2026, 09:20 (15 days ago) @ Bryan (IrishCavan)

...is Soucek fouling Havertz, clearing him away from the near post.

Then three grabs by Arsenal players, the most egregious by Rice.

Then the foul on Raya.

I personally don't have a problem with overturning the goal

by Bryan (IrishCavan), Howth Castle and Environs, Monday, May 11, 2026, 09:46 (15 days ago) @ ndroman21

I guess I'd rather have Arsenal win the league over the unnamed sovereign wealth team that cheats. The problem is the refs allow this to go on in the box, and they are so inconsistent in calling fouls on GK. And the people running VAR are so damn incompetent.

Yeah at least our billionaire owners are American.

by ndroman21, Monday, May 11, 2026, 10:06 (15 days ago) @ Bryan (IrishCavan)

Havertz is already yanking Soucek's jersey.

by PMan @, The Banks of the Spokane River, Monday, May 11, 2026, 09:46 (15 days ago) @ ndroman21

The whole thing is an embarrassment to everyone involved.

It's out of control.

by ndroman21, Monday, May 11, 2026, 10:04 (15 days ago) @ PMan

I see Soucek all over Havertz and then Havertz grabbing on as he tries to get back to the near post he's supposed to defend. Then they both just fall down.

I don't know what the solution is. You're going to be giving away a ridiculous amount of penalties trying to clean it up now.

You realize you have three more matches to survive, right?

by HCE, Sunday, May 10, 2026, 12:45 (16 days ago) @ MTIrish

There's also that little matter in Budapest in a few weeks...

Credit to Arteta (and VAR) for bringing back "one-nil to the Arsenal" today, but if I were a Gooner, ending the season away at Palace would give me heart palpitations.

Palace has a cup final 3 days later….

by MTIrish, Sunday, May 10, 2026, 13:08 (16 days ago) @ HCE

Hoping they have a heavily rotated side

I wouldn't be surprised to see Bournemouth

by Bryan (IrishCavan), Howth Castle and Environs, Monday, May 11, 2026, 08:30 (15 days ago) @ MTIrish

get a result against Citeh.

I feel the same

by MTIrish, Tuesday, May 12, 2026, 13:03 (14 days ago) @ Bryan (IrishCavan)

They are on fire right now and within touching distance of the CL spots.

City play 3 games in like 7 days, ending with the tie away to the cherries
