Rough start to the offseason for Ivey

by BPH, San Diego, Friday, April 17, 2026, 10:23 (2 days ago)

Prosper went pro, zero portal commitments so far, and just today Bransford entered the portal after announcing she was returning. I guess the hope is that she was scared off by portal additions that havenʻt been announced yet, but still. I hope weʻre willing and able to spend big to ensure that HH can go out with a bang.

The Prosper news last week hurt

Couldn't have been worse timing for the WNBA to announce a new CBA. Salaries nearly quintupled overnight. It's going to be weird for this year's draftees who will make more money than vets on current deals.

Congrats to Cass who was selected 19th overall.

Niele has her work cut out for her. She is fortunate Hannah is a "ride or die" kind of kid. I thought Ivey was a great recruiter that got caught by COVID. But I am starting to get a little worried about her ability to keep a team intact. Because this has felt like an annual occurrence thus far where we lose some valuable pieces that logically should have been returning contributors.

Does Ivey work hard on the recruiting trail?

by San Pedro @, More than 100 feet from Bob Davies, Friday, April 17, 2026, 11:34 (2 days ago) @ Domer99

Obviously different level of effort required in hoops v. football, but more of it falls on the head coach being directly involved. Is she doing enough, because her recruiting has been very hit or miss. Tons of holes created by low number classes.

I'm not sure how hard she goes at it

by Domer99, John Wesley Powell's Expedition Island, Friday, April 17, 2026, 11:58 (2 days ago) @ San Pedro

But she did land top 10ish level recruits in Miles, Citron, and Hidalgo. I think Maddy Westbeld was also a top recruit. Kate Koval was a 5*.

I think she has legitimate recruiting chops.

But it's the Mike Brey redux conundrum.

2023, the Irish signed one player (Hidalgo), ditto 2022 when they only signed Bransford. In 2021 they signed 2 (albeit highly rated in Citron and Miles).

You can't go 3 straight classes and sign a total of 4 HS players. Not in women's college basketball. It's forced us to scramble in the portal and not land great fits. But these unbalanced classes really throw a wrench into roster management. Made worse by our inability to keep these ladies on the roster.

Her biggest problem is one of strategy.

by KGB, Belly o. the Beast, Friday, April 17, 2026, 12:05 (2 days ago) @ Domer99

Similar to Brey, although he was kinda lazy too IMO.

You can't just take a handful of moonshots in recruiting every year and not have a backup plan. Which actually is a form of not working hard enough, if we're being honest.

I’ve never been convinced she’s any good at X’s & O’s either

HH might actually be a better coach on the floor.

And that assistant coach Carol should’ve been fired years ago.

I know this board has been trying to put Ivey on the hot seat for years (especially with Brey no longer in place to kick around) but are we really landing on "She doesn't work hard at recruiting and is also bad at Xs and Os" for one of three coaches to have made the last five Sweet Sixteens? Plus an Elite Eight, some ACC titles and an AP No. 1 ranking. It's a half-decade run via, what, magic and good fortune (which ignores various ACL tears and courtside nasal procedures)?

Sweet Sixteens can't be the ceiling and not to say you can't nitpick the half-court offense or some of the broader roster management strategies like KGB mentioned -- I don't know if there is a good answer in modern college hoops and think "I'll recruit a few no-brainer prospects, keep them happy with playing time and supplement with transfers" isn't a terrible idea but runs into the realities of portal randomness, Notre Dame admissions and potential checkbook limitations.

For those who don't follow closely, Ivey switched up strategies and is bringing in a top three recruiting class with five legit prospects this summer and has two top five high schoolers coming in to visit for Blue-Gold. For further recruiting background, I'd cross-reference 1) Her arrival on the sideline for Muffet 2) Muffet's tournament results after that 3) The number of WNBA players who just signed seven-figure deals and were recruited to ND by Ivey. I'd also reference Hannah choosing to stay all four years despite some massive offers from SEC country.

FYI Cass Prosper is trickier to pay via NIL because she's Canadian. She also early enrolled and her brother is in the NBA so I think the goal was always go pro as quickly as possible to make it a family affair. If there is bad blood between her and Ivey, it certainly was hidden on draft night.

Good stuff.

I think the game coaching part is overblown when you consider that Ivey was an assistant for the Grizzlies. They are not making DEI hires in those NBA roles.

Also, no one should confuse what happens in the portal with "recruiting". Not the same in the least.

CW, I've been kind of a resident Ivey apologist

by Domer99, John Wesley Powell's Expedition Island, Saturday, April 18, 2026, 13:53 (1 day, 4 hours, 58 min. ago) @ CW (Rakes)

I'd say the only area I've been critical is roster management. And really not so much recruiting but maintaining the roster at hand.

I agree with nearly all of what you say. In some ways, it's a damn miracle we've been able to compete like we have.

The flip side is that Muffet built this program and was just outside the cusp of South Carolina or UConn, and surpassed Tennessee. The momentum behind Ivey was such that it's seemed a little more attainable to keep us at that level. For a variety of reasons, it just hasn't played out like that. I don't put all of the blame on Niele's shoulders but I am not sure I see the path towards the perennial elite program.

100% agree with you on the goal

by CW (Rakes) @, Harlan County, Sunday, April 19, 2026, 04:21 (14 hours, 30 minutes ago) @ Domer99

But consider how much has changed since Muffet retired. Women's basketball went from "No NIL, and you can't make that much in the pros" to "You can make six and maybe touch seven figures in college if you're good, and now max players are getting seven-figure deals in the pros." That makes the value of the Notre Dame degree and network less of a big deal on its own.

Now if you can get paid a great amount AND get the ND degree and the ND network, that's awesome, but we need continued evidence the university is willing to pony up for it and not just try to coast off brand. Obviously they're spending some — you don't keep Hannah with big-time SEC overtures or bring in this recruiting class or some solid transfers if you're not — but look at what teams like Louisville, Duke, South Carolina, etc. are doing in the portal, keeping their talented cores and adding. If you want ND to be back at the 2010s level, ND has to match that. UConn is still flying high but a lot of the teams in the Final Fours during that time (Stanford, Mississippi State, Baylor, Maryland, etc.) aren't anything special, and Tennessee is an absolute mess. On the other side, Texas, UCLA and TCU decided to spend and now look at them. And God bless Muffet but she didn't exactly hand a perennial Final Four roster over to Ivey so that momentum was stunted even before you get into portal/NIL era realities.

If they keep most of this 2026 class for their sophomore year and beyond and continue to add talent, that will be a wonderful sign. If they don't, that would not make me feel good about the theory of "Notre Dame is really only spending on football and otherwise they'll coast on brand and a few bucks for the rest of the sports." I guess you could say all departures are an Ivey problem but I don't think you can hear Iyana Moore's comments or see how absolute lunatic competitors (compliment) like Hannah or Skylar feel about her and think there's something drastic missing.

And you shouldn't have to be the apologist for a really good coach! =) Highly recommend the Irish Alert newsletter, the writer is an alum who knows 10000x more about women's hoops than me. This was his last edition which I am leaning on:

Just to repeat: I think if the lesson learned this season in the Notre Dame athletics department and larger administration is, “Wow look, the team made the Elite Eight with a low budget! We don’t need to spend more!”, that is actively harmful to the operation here. The standard of this program is more than just barely squeaking its way past the Sweet 16 once every five or six years. The real lesson ought to be, “If Niele Ivey has proven she can coach an underfunded roster to the Elite Eight, imagine what she could do with a few years at competitive rates.” Notre Dame athletics has the sixth-highest valuation of any college athletics department in the country. You do not need to take money from other sports to give it to the women’s basketball team, just increase your operating expenses across the board and fund the program so it can be where it belongs, in the nation’s upper echelon.

She clearly has been learning on the job

The incoming class is evidence that she finally has figured out the HS recruiting side of things, but when it comes to the portal, I fear the problem is not effort or strategy so much as a lack of NIL funding and commitment. It could be a version of what menʻs hoops is going through, with so many NIL dollars going to football.

I have a hard time buying the NIL argument

by Domer99, John Wesley Powell's Expedition Island, Friday, April 17, 2026, 13:22 (2 days ago) @ BPH

I've been a broken record on this so I won't go into my normal anti-Noie diatribe. But there is no way you keep Olivia Miles after her junior injury season if you are not paying her pretty well. Frankly, there was a lot of smoke around her potential departure at the time so the opportunity to bolt was certainly there.

And we were paying for Hidalgo at the same time. Citron too. And it could be that ND has some self-selectors that would stay just because of the school. But I think Olivia ultimately proved that she was not that type. Personally, I think she left primarily because of the Hannah dust up.

Iʻm talking about right now

by BPH, San Diego, Friday, April 17, 2026, 14:20 (2 days ago) @ Domer99

I think the money for top portal players, as with other sports, has increased considerably even in the past couple of years. Iʻd love to think that weʻre going to be able to keep up in this new environment, but the proof will have to come very shortly.

Audi Crooks will be informative

Because I was seeing reports of her NIL value (demands?) north of $500k.

And maybe she is just a current known name in the spotlight but there appear to be many Notre Dame mentions and associations with her. What I don't know is if it's coming from connected sources or just wishful thinking because of her popularity.

But I also think Hannah coming back is at least anecdotal of some commitment level.

And because she (presumably)

Wanted to be the Alpha on her team to improve her draft stock. And by definition, one cannot be an Alpha if one is a teammate of Hannah Freaking Hidalgo.

This.

I still find it amazing that she ever returned at all, especially with all of the hindsight.

Would have been better if she didn’t return.

by San Pedro @, More than 100 feet from Bob Davies, Friday, April 17, 2026, 13:55 (2 days ago) @ Domer99

I doubt we would have seen the implosion of the team that resulted from her feud with Hidalgo.

Good bit of noise around adding that scoring post from

Iowa State. No idea how realistic that is, and no idea how she'd be likely to mesh with HH.

Seems like we need at least a couple top tier 3 point shooters for HH to kick it to.

The most likely addition seems to be

by BPH, San Diego, Friday, April 17, 2026, 10:54 (2 days ago) @ BillyGoat

a guard from Princeton who would play next to Hannah (though I wish she were a better shooter).
