Mike Johnson is an evangelical from northern Louisiana. Not exactly fans of Catholics up there, especially the Catholics south of them. I note that the Catholic Trumper governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, is completely and uncharacteristically silent on the matter.

“For over a thousand years, the Catholic Church has taught just war theory and it is that long tradition the Holy Father carefully references in his comments on war. A constant tenet of that thousand-year tradition is a nation can only legitimately take up the sword ‘in self-defense, once all peace efforts have failed’ (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2308). That is, to be a just war it must be a defense against another who actively wages war, which is what the Holy Father actually said: ‘He does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war.’
“When Pope Leo XIV speaks as supreme pastor of the universal Church, he is not merely offering opinions on theology, he is preaching the Gospel and exercising his ministry as the Vicar of Christ. The consistent teaching of the Church is insistent that all people of good will must pray and work toward lasting peace while avoiding the evils and injustices that accompany all wars.”
Again, WILL NOT mention Vance, Trump, or Johnson by name
Contrast this to 2008-2016 and 2020-24, where Obama and Biden were explicitly and personally called out in any statement that even tangentially referenced public policy.

Also, the president of the USCCB, Archbishop Coakley of Oklahoma City, said this on Monday:
"I am disheartened that the President chose to write such disparaging words about the Holy Father," said Archbishop Coakley in a brief statement. "Pope Leo is not his rival; nor is the Pope a politician. He is the Vicar of Christ who speaks from the truth of the Gospel and for the care of souls."

I genuinely dislike the USCCB statement.
"in light of recent public comments" is the weakest mealy-mouthed horseshit they could possibly put out, short of not making a statement at all.
They can't say nothing, but if they put out anything stronger, then they'd run the risk of not stacking the federal judiciary with as many TradCaths as humanly possible, which is priority #1 for the USCCB.
It's both-sidesism adjacent.

I've been scanning releases on the USCCB website. There are references to legislative or regulatory actions by "The Biden Administration," which doesn't seem unfair.

Based on Trump's actions
