PSA: official-looking document scams

I received a very devious and well-designed form (via regular mail) purporting to be a filing notice from the CA Secretary of State office about my LLC. It looked kind of like this, but the disclaimers were even tinier.

It looks exactly like a 501 for filing business statements of information, complete with a fee of $250. This is something you can submit via the CA website for $25.

The CA office has a page all about these scams: https://www.sos.ca.gov/business-programs/customer-alerts/misleading-statement-informati...

Tax season is nigh -- keep an eye out for scams like this.

I found this NK social engineering hack more disturbing

They talked a crypto tech exec in to a zoom mtg. During the mtg they convinced him to install an update that was actually a “clickfix” attack and he ended up installing a bunch of bad stuff and he gave up access to some significant stuff.

This comes across like a pretty sophisticated attack imo w a team of hackers going full bore against a single company/ exec.

The lesson … dont get on zoom mtgs with fake companies? That set up a completely fake meeting environment?

AI's going to make this kind of thing worse

Based on my last trademark filing, the "triggered by public filing" solicitation racket is going gangbusters.

I have moved to a registered agent to handle most of this kind of paperwork, and find paying their markup worthwhile just to not have to think about it much. If you are looking for one, I've found Northwest Registered Agent to be efficient, privacy-oriented, full-service, and not insane pricing.
