College football: Middle-schooler David Sills verbally commits to USC
Quarterback verbals to USC

BY BUDDY HURLOCK, THE NEWS JOURNAL "ยข February 4, 2010

David Sills, a highly-touted youth quarterback, made a verbal commitment tonight to accept a college football scholarship from USC.

Sills is not even in high school yet. He is a seventh-grader at Red Lion Christian Academy in Bear.

Red Lion high school varsity coach Eric Day confirmed the decision by Sills tonight, also confirming that USC coach Lane Kiffin recently offered a scholarship to the 13-year-old Sills.

"I'm very excited but I was very, very nervous," Sills said tonight about talking to Kiffin over the phone. "It was very cool [to talk to Kiffin] but my heart was beating so fast, and I was scared. But after it was over, I was so excited and pumped."

I can't wait until Kiffin gets flagged for another violation

because he offered the kid a bag of Twizzlers to commit to SC.

The local sports station asked Pat Summitt about it

Whether she'd ever consider offering a 7th grader. Her only comment was, "Nothing Lane Kiffin does surprises me."

Their basketball team does this all the time, right?

Not sure.

It is more common for basketball coaches to offer kids pretty early. When Gillespie was at UK, he offered a few prepubescent kids. I don't think it happens that often, partly because the kid who accepted as an eight, ninth, or even tenth grader rarely panned out or stuck with their first school. Really, it is just a dumb tactic on Kiffin's and Gillespie's parts. There is no benefit for the program. Also, even UK fans found Gillespie's offers to be unseemly. I'd like to think that USC fans would feel the same way, but I doubt it.

The disgusting part is how they're playing with the kids

Fast forward 4 years- "We've been committed to you for four years! You need to sign with is!"

or

"You know that wasn't a real offer or commitment right? You're free to look elsewhere and you probably should. It's too bad, you had so much potential I'm sorry to hear you didn't live up to it."

There has to be a better way to say that.

But yes, I agree. On the one hand it could be played up like

"Gee whiz, Mr Kiffin, when I grow up, Im going to play for SC!"
"Ha ha. Sure thing, Billy, now mind your studies and eat your vegetables!"

No, instead we have some poor kid harboring the belief that his football career is laid out for him.

The vast majority of NCAA recruiting is so scummy, I find it hard to believe that anyone with the brains and ability to consider Notre Dame would pass.

"I really did love you, baby. Then you got fat."

It makes the Chris Leak to Wake Forest with CJ story seem sane.

Here's the story from when he did this at Tennessee, too

Note the Editors addition at the top:

Editor's note: This story has been corrected. The NCAA prohibits schools from formally offering scholarships until a prospect has registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center. UT has not offered Berry a scholarship.

Of course that doesn't matter, does it?
