what are the possible "external forces" for JS
that would make remaining independent "untenable" (his words)?
I can only think of one scenario, and that's the BCS cartel finally threatening to cut ND out of the postseason picture. Swarbrick said at an alumni event earlier this year that the BCS committee has ND at the table these days as a "courtesy", implying, I suppose, that we're not there because they need us there. I think it would be harder and harder to justify our participation as an individual entity in the BCS if our stature on the field keeps waning. Now, if we get really good again, this is all moot, and we're back to carrying the big stick.
