As BPH said, I didn't see this one coming.

Jones moving to outside linebackerComment Email Print Share By Brian Bennett

Archive Former Notre Dame transfer Demetrius Jones is on the move again, this time from offense to defense.

Jones was the starting quarterback for the Irish's 2007 season opener before transferring to Cincinnati. The junior will move to outside linebacker this spring for the Bearcats, Cincinnati head coach Brian Kelly told ESPN.com on Monday.

After recovering from shoulder surgery, Jones played in five games for Cincinnati last season. He appeared briefly at quarterback but did not attempt a pass. With senior Tony Pike entrenched in the starting role, he accepted the idea of a position change.

"He's just too good of an athlete," Kelly said. "We need to get him on the field. So we're going to use this spring to take a look at him at that outside linebacker position."

Kelly compared the 6-foot-3, 210-pound Jones to last year's starting outside linebacker Corey Smith, who was similarly sized. Jones played some safety in high school, Kelly said.

"He just wants to play," Kelly said. "He knew Tony was going to be the starter and he's running out of time. He likes the opportunity, so we'll see what happens.

Cincinnati had success with an offense-to-defense switch last season, when former tight end Connor Barwin moved to defensive end. Barwin led the Big East in sacks and projects as a first-day NFL Draft pick in April.

Actually makes me feel bad for the guy.

A few years ago, I'm more than a little certain he didn't see himself as an underperforming linebacker at Cincinnati. He probably had one of the worst transfer in college football history, and that's all on him, but sucks for the guy.

Incredible what a couple of fumbles can do to the cosmic plan.

He left the team hanging in one of their darkest hours.

I realize that he was a rather young guy, but he came to ND to play quarterback because he wanted to be BMOC. With great power comes great responsibility, and he shirked it about as badly as one could imagine.

I certainly don't wish anything bad on Jones, but nor do I get the least bit verklempt when things don't magically fall into place for him. The hard knocks are perhaps better for him in the long run.

I wish he had his come to Jesus moment at ND

He's going to need to gain some weight pronto if he wants to see the field.

I put on 15 lbs in 3 months my freshman year.

45+ lbs in my first year and a half.

Don't act like you're not impressed.

is athleticism not required for a fencer?

How did you fence with an extra 45 pounds?

Or was it pure muscle?

I'm not a stiff.

Heh - hopefully some will get that.

Seriously, its a lot of fast twitch/hand-eye and flexibility.

One of the best fencers I know (on the '04 Olympic team) was a hefty dude. Probably 5'10" and 220 or so. Not muscle. Insane reflexes though.
