Metrics

Discussions elswhere have had me thinking about what stats need to improve for the program to be a consistent contender. I would have to think there is a list of concrete benchmarks the team would have to hit. Here were a some that I was thinking about or have seen as generally accepted standards

4ypc rushing
7-8 ypc passing
70% completion
In general, a "top 20" MOE (see also BGS post)
+10-+20 takeaways
2 ypc rushing allowed
-5 yds per punt return allowed

Obviously all are up for discussion as well as any other metrics (off the field ie recruting etc as well) as this is a discussion board.

Move some of the metrics, perhaps?

Because some of the statistical benchmarks you mention are extremely unlikely for any one team to reach.

Others, like 4 yards/carry on offense and 7-8 yds/catch, seem low. I'd move the "catch" to "attempt" and bump it to exactly 8.0.

Only 2 teams total in all of the last 5 years have reached the 2.00 yds/carry against benchmark. Keeping it under 3.50 would have made a team a Top 25 rush defense last year.

Only 3 teams in the nation reached 70% completion last year. 63% or better would have been Top 25.

And only 15 teams were +10 or better in turnover margin last year. Still, that seems like a more reasonable goal.

I figured under 2 yards rush defense was a bold statement. I agree with your other points. I was wondering what else would be on such a list.
