red zone passing game

I'm in the midst of breaking down the red zone offense. I found this decline very telling.

2005
33-51, 291 yards, 62%, 5.5 ypa

2006
28-52, 227 yards, 54%, 4.4 ypa

2008
20-48, 158 yards, 42%, 3.3 ypa

As far as 2008 goes, against Pitt and Syracuse, Clausen was 4-16 for 33 yards.

Overreliance on the fade?

Thanks, one question...

Are you, by chance, breaking it down to the level of looking at throw-aways?

I've had a suspicion that a lot of the bad red zone passing numbers had a lot to do with the OL getting complacent.

to answer this and BPH's question on fades

4 hurries and 0 clear throw-aways.

I'm eventually going to break it down by type of pass, too. Here are the numbers for the Fade.

5-15, 38 yards
2 drops by Tate
2 bad calls by refs
5 tds (obviously), 1 int

Interestingly enough, I show Clausen as 2-2 for two scores from Detroit. I have no idea if losing our TEs affected our red zone passing that much, but it's also interesting to note that the first five times we threw the fade in the red zone, there were Regular/Detroit packages on the field. While we were 2 for 2 from Detroit, we were 0 for 3 from Regular.

After that, it was all Half/Jax, all the time. (Jax is 4 WRs, 1 TE)

2-2 Detroit
0-3 Regular
1-1 Jax
2-9 Half

Also-- because I didn't start tracking routes until this year, there's no way to compare this to 2005 or 2006. But I think we would all agree that we never saw as many fades as we did this year.

I would guess the loss of TEs...

really hurt in the "loss" of the TE drag and the TE out. But I'm going from recollection there. I just know they were both plays that scored from the red zone with enough frequency as to make me wonder why Ds weren't keying on them.

this may surprise you

but TE usage has been surprisingly consistent. It definitely surprised me.

Here is a breakdown of red zone targets (not catches, but times the ball was thrown to a particular player).

We threw to the TEs in the red zone just 8 times in 2005 (Fasano 7, Carlson 1).

Not much better in 2006, either. We threw it to the TE 9 times (Carlson 5, Freeman 4). We actually threw it to Freeman all four times after Carlson's injury. Never did we throw it to him when he was the 2nd TE on the field.

In 2008, we threw to Rudolph 7 times.

In terms of who were our red zone targets in those years, here's some more info.

2005 (58 passes)
Samardzija - 41%
Stovall - 26%
Fasano - 12%
Walker - 7%
Schwapp - 5%
McKnight, Shelton - 3% each
Carlson - 2%

2006 (60 passes)
Samardzija - 42%
McKnight - 25%
Carlson/Freeman (#1 TE) - 15%
Walker - 5%
Grimes - 5%
McConnell - 2%
West, Anastasio - 2% each
2 balls were thrown away due to pressure

2008 (55 passes)
Tate - 25%
Floyd - 24%
Rudolph - 13%
Kamara - 13%
Grimes - 13%
Allen - 7%
Hughes - 4%
Parris - 2%

Is Busco calling these plays?

The tight end, properly utilized, is the most dangerous receiver in the red zone. One day the world will understand this. That is my solemn vow.

Just reaffirms the fact that I'm a lousy witness.

I had a feeling it was ugly, but I had no idea how bad.
