Egypt up 1 nil and they just had a goal taken away off a brilliant counter.
Update edit - Man that Egyptian counterattack has been devastating to Argentina. Egypt now up 2 NIL.
OMG! Best game of WC! Though it feels like Egypt is

getting fucked.
Disagree. So sloppy on both sides.

It's like a futsal match (or, I suppose you could say "NBA basketball on grass") with lots of tremendous individual plays, but just complete lack of structure in the game and no defense whatsoever.
Very exciting, I suppose, but if it weren't a tournament darling the takeaway would be "this is Sunday league shit, not world class football".
Best for someone new to the game!

That is not what VAR was intended for.

BS to overturn it. Luckily, they just went up (again) by 2.
How far back can they go on video review?

that feels like overturning a TD pass because 5 plays earlier video shows a missed holding call.

My issue is the misuse of VAR
by Bryan (IrishCavan), Howth Castle and Environs, Wednesday, July 08, 2026, 04:23 (16 days ago) @ omahadomer
I was naive enough to believe them when they said it would only be used for clear and obvious mistakes, not to re-referee the game. Actually, VAR has been used decently during the WC but, IMO, this is a misuse. Refs are going to miss some calls, but common sense is missing with review. Savage is correct about the rule, but Argentina had plenty of opportunities to stop the counter, and that should be taken into account.
I'll also add

that there has been inconsistency, with favoritism toward the bigger football countries, especially Argentina. I seriously doubt they would have overturned the goal had it been Argentina, especially Messi, that scored a goal like that. I read a stat this morning that Argentina have received a card every 22 fouls. Compare that to England, who have received a card every 7 fouls. And it isn't like Argentina doesn't engage in physical play. It is no different than the top leagues, where the bigger teams often get more favorable officiating.
The beginning of the possession

(Officially the “attacking phase of play”, which defines some caveats about deflections out for immediate throw ins and the like.)
In this case, while it was pushing it in terms of being all the way back at the other end of the field, I do think it was justified since the foul caused the turnover that immediately resulted in a continuous counterattack culminating in the goal.
you didn't think they were going to let Egypt win did you?

But, yeah, they were never going to let Messi lose if possible.
Exactly. that's what it feels like.
