OT: Politics. Mallory McMorrow drops out of Michigan race

Kind of surprising. I thought she seemed pretty good.

It's disappointing to me

by Regular Joseph @, Monday, July 06, 2026, 19:32 (15 days ago) @ BPH

I was excited about Platner as a candidate, but he should drop out.

As I've defended him here, I think there's a big lane for earthy leftist populist. I don't accept the argument that his tatoo makes his misogyny self-evident. That's revisionist. He was a risky profile, but one that I think is worth plumbing.

I think Blackwater is repulsive, and I don't like that Platner was in it. BUT I think it is more persuasive to a lot of people when someone who was legitimately fighting these wars comes around and says they're stupid. Just like it's more persuasive when someone who owns a small business talks about an unfair tax system. I think we need to be willing to accept some sins. (Again, not this kind of rape allegation.)

Platner was fake in his own ways, I'm sure, but he succeeded in reaching a broad spectrum of people with a message and with political talent. I think it will be very hard to be popular party and have every representative of it be a suit that's been honing their CV for 20 years.

It's crazy town to not vet a guy

who has never been a candidate for much of anything -- state legislative, state office, whatever.

The chances that bad sh*t will show up are high, as it did with Trump -- it's just that he won anyway.

What the hell was the Mills campaign doing? Did they have no capacity to do oppo research? You'd think Sanders would have enough of an infrastructure to not throw in with a guy with no real background.

Talk about a self-inflicted wound.

If you believe noted MAGA rag The Atlantic. Some excerpts:

Last September, the progressive strategist Morris Katz confessed to The New Yorker that the process by which he decided that Graham Platner was qualified to run for U.S. Senate required less time than drinking a cup of coffee. Actually, it seems to have been less a confession than a boast. “Within a few minutes of talking to him, I was, like, ‘This guy owes it to the country to run for Senate,’” Katz recalled.

and

There is no longer much question as to whether Platner is suitable for public office, and even less question as to whether plucking him from political obscurity made any sense. A more pertinent question is: What could possibly drive a professional political strategist to support such a rapid promotion in mere minutes?

One plausible reason appears to be political ideology. Katz and his allies have sought out candidates who are willing to castigate the Democratic Party for selling out the working class—which necessitates, or at least militates toward, candidates who have no experience inside the party. And whereas this ideological orientation requires an intensity of commitment, it does not require a mastery of policy detail.

and

In reality, Platner was the Democratic-candidate equivalent of the grinning empty suit who gets the job after a handshake because the boss likes the cut of his jib. He looked like the authentic working-class hero so many progressives wanted, so he had to be one. George Burns once quipped, “When you’re playing a role you’ve got to be honest. And if you can fake that, you’ve got it made.” In politics, people call this “authenticity.” But maybe looking and sounding like a working-class dude who hates big corporations is not adequate qualification for high office—or even proof that you can be taken at your word.

Were Hilary’s email a real issue?
Was Hunter Biden’s laptop a real issue?

Was Donald Trump raping a 12 or 13 year old a real issue? There’s plenty of supporting data for that one.

So we’ve seen swiftboat attacks. (There’s tons of these fake GOP attacks out there in the last 25 years).

We’ve seen other Democratic candidates taken down by this same well timed attack method. We know there’s a ton of RW extremist billionaire’s calling the shots on our major news media. Heck we know Trump used to buy and kill rape stories about himself from coming out.

Its fine, you guys can decide Platner is too terrible of a human being, but I look at who’s he’s competing against and there’s no question.

Year after year people fall for this crap and I’m not having it any more.

OOHHH Hilary’s laptop … the crimes she committed against humanity.

Meanwhile the convicted felon has grifted America for $2billion, shut down much of the scientific (& fact based) US community. The guy is destroying America (SCOTUS is in his pocket making up completely batshit crazy arguments) and when some extremely well timed attack gets MASSIVE publicity right on schedule, you guys dont even think twice? Really?

Do you not see the forest for the trees?

So no, I’m not buying it. You all are free to do as you please.

an edit here?

Like I’m sure republicans are tickled that a guy with a tattoo with nazi connotations and a history of disturbing online comments got the dem nomination in a vulnerable state- but I am deeply uncomfortable with calling someone going public with SA allegations “swiftboating”….

There is a lot of disturbing info about this guy and has been for months. I find it baffling that he got this far but that’s not the point here. It’s concerning if TPG is place where we don’t take accusations of sexual wrongdoing seriously, especially those made with someone’s full name and with a significant amount of documentation over the past few years.

Not trying to be combative or insult your fav (and I agree with the vast majority of his positions, which shouldn’t matter but just fyi) but would be great to not dismiss women’s experiences because it’s politically inconvenient.

What does she have to gain?

It reminds me of Dr. Ford who came out against Kavanaugh. Not only was she utterly believable but I thought "what would her play be?" She obviously didn't want to be a public figure.

Why are these allegations getting massive publicity in the news exactly 1 week before a replacement has to be submitted?

MAGA is not honest.

Nothing about a felon POTUS with an atrociously bad record and terrible ratings, heading in to an election where he's going to get slaughtered for destroying America tells us we should just openly accept accusations 1 week before the “eject from the race” deadline.

The US Supreme Court is massively partisan right now. They are not doing what is best for all of America. We know the US courts cant be trusted any more.

So when I weigh these potential allegations, I take all of this in to account.

And right now, the bullshit meter is at 110%. I think we should take these allegations seriously in this context. Lets not blindly see a tree and not notice its a FRIKON FOREST.

Revisiting this today. You undercut your whole argument.

edited by Greg, Tuesday, July 07, 2026, 17:26

Why are these allegations getting massive publicity in the news exactly 1 week before a replacement has to be submitted?

If this were ginned up by Republicans they would for sure wait until after the deadline passed and then start hammering Platner. They'd hammer him on his tattoo, on his online comments, on the volatile behavior recounted by many women, on the sexting recounted by other women, on not having a real small business but instead selling 75%+ of his product to his mother's business, on taking a no-repayment loan from his dad accounting for about 85% of the cost of his house, and then if all of that didn't work they'd add a fake rape.

Why bring out the fake rape a week before a candidate with all that other baggage couldn't be replaced? That's just dumb. And while the current Republican leadership is cruel, immoral, and anti-American they are not politically dumb.

No, this really happened.

I dont think that’s how these attacks work

by Mark, Tuesday, July 07, 2026, 18:19 (15 days ago) @ Greg
edited by Mark, Tuesday, July 07, 2026, 18:24

Look at the historical swift boat attacks …

The method is to start whisper attacks weeks/ months ahead of time. “Well we always heard rumors he was XYZ”

Then you put the entire Democratic party in a situation where they are forced to make a tough decision. Kind of reminds me of how “Sleepy Joe Biden cant get it done”. Oh did you see THAT? He’s so bad he’s practically on life support in an ICU!!” (No that’s Mitch).

It then forces the Democratic party to attack itself splitting your competition in half.

Moderates, where a lot of elections are won, get split and folks (like a lot of the people on this forum) complain “Oh the Democratic party is incompetent”, even though its very clearly Team Trump that fumbles international negotiations and starts wars for Netanyahu.

Seriously, this is perfect timing.

Why just beat Plattner when you can beat him AND destroy public support for the ENTIRE Democratic party?

Like I said, the timing is way too suspicious. If Platner is guilty then take him to court. Dont make him guilty (wrongfully) in the court of public opinion without letting him have an honest day in court.

So lets ask ourselves, why did Mitch McConnell’s wife leave the country when he’s in critical care?

Look this MAGA leadership is NOT honest in ANY way, shape or form. They dont play by the rules, and they certainly dont think the rules apply to their own. EVERYTHING should be seen through that lens. SO yeah, I still dont throw Platner out the window just bc a typical takedown story is thrown in a massive media spotlight with HIGHLY suspect timing.

If you’re not asking “why now?”, I just dont think you’re paying attention.

Let Platner have his day in a US court if his victim really wants to see him arrested for his crimes. Until then, he’s innocent until proven guilty. Everything else is just highly suspect political theater.

That's not sane

by Greg, seemingly ranch, Wednesday, July 08, 2026, 07:21 (14 days ago) @ Mark
edited by Greg, Wednesday, July 08, 2026, 07:26

I'm sorry. It makes no rational sense.

Everything but the new allegations was known when he was running in the primary but was covered up or downplayed or pooh-poohed by his progressive backers because he fit the mold and said the right things - no vetting was done and when things started leaking out the backers just trumpeted his progressive "credentials" because there were no accomplishments to speak of. But all of those other things - tattoo, job, house, relationships with women throughout his life - were enough to sink him from a Republican perspective. Because as you say, the current leadership of that party is good at sinking things.

This is true. There is zero reason not to believe this woman's story, and the amount of detail should convince any skeptic.

He was a populist centrist at the beginning of his campaign

by San Pedro @, Wednesday, July 08, 2026, 07:30 (14 days ago) @ Greg

He didn't veer left until Sanders/Warren and their ilk came out for him and influenced his policy positions.

The reason he was such an attractive candidate was due to the perception that he resonated with white working class males. Some of his earliest endorsements and support came from the electrical workers, who became increasingly concerned about his tack left.

Thanks!

by Greg, seemingly ranch, Wednesday, July 08, 2026, 07:38 (14 days ago) @ San Pedro

I started picking up on him only after he veered left. It kinda tracks, though, that he'd just go with whatever his most powerful endorsers wanted him to say - the electricians you noted early, then the progressives later, and who knows maybe Trump himself if Platner got elected and met the big orange guy. Thanks for the background.
