Mexico Vs UK thresd

by hobbs, San Diego, CA, Sunday, July 05, 2026, 18:40 (18 days ago)

I did not have Eng up 2 NIL on my bingo card. Azteca is stunned. Tonight was supposed to be a celebration.

That first crossing pass on the 1st goal was beautiful.

I can't imagine a nation having 3 more unlikable players than him, Fernandez, and Silva. Also, Roberto Martinez is just not a good coach.

Well Ill say this

by Mark, Sunday, July 05, 2026, 20:16 (18 days ago) @ hobbs

England played defense like I learned it.

They didnt back away from shit. They went straight at the attacker and took a number of shots to the body in a defensive effort. All WC I’ve been watching other teams half ass it and thinking wtf is wrong with them. Step in to the shot and close off the attackers angle. Dont flinch like a little wussy boy. Man up. Dont give up free shots. You’re playing in the World Cup for God’s sake. Act like a professional.

So, in my book, mad props to England for playing some old school defense, especially when down a man.

Really gutsy performance imo.

Really good game management from Tuchel

by Aaron (Shakespeare), Monday, July 06, 2026, 07:25 (17 days ago) @ Mark

Tuchel took a lot of heat for some of his roster selections, and notably if any of the "snubs" had made it, one of the guys who would have gotten edged out was probably Dan Burn, the 6'7" defender who came on for the last half hour of the game yesterday.

The guy won every header and made every clearance - it's almost as if he was on the roster for the specific circumstance of "what if we're down to 10 men and the other team is firing crosses at us for 30 straight minutes."

Definitely

by Mark, Monday, July 06, 2026, 10:55 (17 days ago) @ Aaron (Shakespeare)

There’s a picture of Dan Burn in this article stepping in to Mexico’s bicycle kick and blocking it with his face/head.

In soccer, that’s as bad ass of a defensive play as I’ve seen in quite a few years.

You gotta give the man props for that kind of grit. That’s a team that really wants to win.

Not sure if it is good or bad that their defenders see Haaland all the time.

I get that they are down a man

by MattG, Sunday, July 05, 2026, 19:44 (18 days ago) @ hobbs

But why is England not even trying to control the ball? As soon as they get it, they kick it way downfield and let Mexico attack again. It’s like watching a power play, and that seems way different from USA Bosnia

England was sucking wind at the end

by beattherush, Chicago, Sunday, July 05, 2026, 20:25 (18 days ago) @ MattG

I was thinking the same thing too, until one of England’s midfielders got knocked down and took about a minute to get up at a critical juncture. if they were that wiped out, bunkering up was smart.

I preferred the US approach too. Don’t know if our guys are just in better shape - Poch, I’ve read, tends to expect high motor - but we were at sea level. So any commentary I have is from the peanut gallery for sure.

That was Harry Kane

They played him much further back tonight than attackers of similar rank on opposing teams (Messi. Mbappe, Ronaldo.....)

Of note against Brazil Haaland was working back as well. He wasn't back as much as Kane but he was drifting back further than he usually does.

Haaland's last goal was hilarious.

Tuchel ball + no legs/lungs at altitude

I questioned it at first as well. I came to

by hobbs, San Diego, CA, Sunday, July 05, 2026, 20:10 (18 days ago) @ Savage

realize that it was smart. They always had 10 men in front of the ball defensively. If they had tried to work the midfield area Mexico could have countered with numbers on a attack.

Basically he was protecting his lead and defense at altitude.

Someone needs to explain the Kane penalty to me like

by atxND, Sunday, July 05, 2026, 19:38 (18 days ago) @ Jeremy (WeIsND)

I’m a toddler. If you start the act of trying to kick a ball in the air and the other player introduces his foot in between the ball and your foot at the last second, it’s a penalty? It’s impossible to stop your momentum. Does intent not matter?

Gets called a penalty all the time.

by PMan @, The Banks of the Spokane River, Sunday, July 05, 2026, 20:07 (18 days ago) @ atxND

Defender swiping at the ball and an attacker gets a leg in barely first.

Agree, but still think it is the wrong call.

by Bryan (IrishCavan), Howth Castle and Environs, Monday, July 06, 2026, 08:49 (17 days ago) @ PMan

I think the notion of just about any contact in the box is a penalty needs to go away, but I'm likely in the minority.

Bad call.

Not a Kane fan at all, but that was the wrong call. I'll also add that I think penalties are given far too often. It should be more than just a small contact with a player.

Definitely controversial

by Savage, Around Ye Olde Colonial College, Sunday, July 05, 2026, 19:49 (18 days ago) @ atxND

Intent doesn’t matter, like in the Balogun RC: players are expected to have sometimes practically supernatural body control. But also, while the Mexican definitely was shitty hanging a leg in front of Kane with no real expectation of winning the ball, he did in fact come across before Kane’s kick started

you got it, except it was not controversial

by Costa Rican @, the central american Jungle!, Monday, July 06, 2026, 07:58 (17 days ago) @ Savage

it is a penalty flat out. The Mexico player came from behind and beat him to the spot. If the defender wasn't fast enough to kick it or secure the place, then too bad, it is a penalty. Just the way it is, it was controversial, because it was England and they had gone up 3-1, but really any other game out there, even without VAR, that is a penalty.

By the way I hate the lazy refs we are seeing, they see the play in front of them and don't call it. They wait for the VAR to come in and correct it. Not sure that the ref association is seeing this, but might as well have robots out there if you are not going to call things on the field.

Thank you.
