Balogun reinstated by FIFA vs Belgium

This US team has looked good. And it’s been fun to follow their run.

But now, if they beat Belgium, it will feel like it is with an asterisk. It will feel unearned or undeserved in some sense.

I get that the red card on Balogun was very controversial and may have included a breach of VAR protocols. But soccer has lived with the consequences of bad calls forever. A red card has always meant an additional suspension. Yet for reasons that aren’t clear, the US gets seemingly special treatment. A reprieve like this has never happened in tournament regardless of whether a call was any good.

I’ll admit to having a natural bent toward following the rules even when they result in unfair outcomes. My job includes certain compliance responsibilities, and I work hard to get people to understand that our default should be to follow policy even if it leads to bad results. I advise people that we can’t change policy in the middle of a situation. We can change it after the fact, but once an issue has arisen, we have to follow policy.

I also take the position that exceptions to policies should only be made in circumstances that are unlikely to be repeated because one you make an exception, you have to make it in other instances that are the basically the same.

This situation is just painful for me. I think the right way to handle this for FIFA would be to acknowledge the problems associated with this red card, but stand by the consequences of it. They don’t even have to say that the red card was wrong. But the long-standing rules place these decisions in the hands of a single ref. This leads to inconsistencies in how similar situations are called. This is a normal part of sport and is something all teams and players playing multiple games over time will both benefit from and be harmed by.

Balogun’s foul was not remarkable. It was a foul. Over 1,000 instances of the same foul, you would likely get a range of outcomes, many of which would include a red card. And if you looked at a set of 1,000 red cards given, I doubt this one would register as the most egregious, let alone some outlier justifying unprecedented after-the-fact action.

But here we are. The US team is the beneficiary of an action never before taken in the World Cup and one that goes contrary to decades of international, professional, and amateur soccer matches. Because there is nothing particularly remarkable about the red card apart from it being controversial in a seemingly normal sense, this reprieve feels unearned. And if it positively influences the outcome of the Belgium game, that sense of “unearned” will carry over to the victory in a way that will make it a little less joyful for me.

That has nothing to do with Trump, by the way. If he’d never called, it would still feel off.

So this all just sucks.

I agree with this as well. And my job has similar concepts

by BillyGoat @, At Thanksgiving with Joe Bethersontin, Monday, July 06, 2026, 10:33 (16 days ago) @ bk

involved.

If there were a structured appeal process, that would be fine. But as I understand it, it feels more like a kangaroo court.

And I totally agree that bad calls are just part of the sport. God knows we've seen our share as ND fans, just in the age of this board. The Tuitt targeting against Pitt. The OPI at FSU. The targeting non-call involving Torii Hunter Jr. About two dozen "excessive blocking" calls on McKnight, Floyd, and Claypool. The holding non-call involving Hinish against A&M. Those kinds of call suck, but that's just human fallibility.

US Soccer should probably just announce Balogun will be left out of the squad tonight to ensure the appearance of the integrity of the contest, and move on. Beat Belgium and he can play in the quarterfinal.

That I saw the subject of your post in the "Latest Posts" box and had to click on it to see who, of the myriad candidates in this discussion about soccer, should be in prison.

Could have been Blatter. Could have been Trump (obviously, and 11 ways from Sunday). Could have been the referee with a history of match fixing. Could be Ronaldo. Could be like 50 other individuals named in the conversation.

It's like a month ago, we were all talking about how crazy and corrupt this runaway train of NIL had become and the madness of college football in general. And then the World Cup rolled into "town" and said, "hold my beer."

Knicks fans respect it.

Definitely not a vintage Brasil team. Usually they have 2/3 Vinícius Jr's and they just attack from everywhere. This Brasil team just had Vini Jr and that was it. They were never able to simply overwhelm opponents on the attack.

It was quite the sight to see Neymar Jr bawling tears on the pitch after the match.

It's time to stop romanticizing Brazil

by HCE, Sunday, July 05, 2026, 16:17 (17 days ago) @ hobbs

their managers.

I dont know if its the manager

by Mark, Sunday, July 05, 2026, 18:02 (16 days ago) @ PMan

I thought Brasil was just out of sync with this World Cup.

Neymar Jr is past his prime and has been suffering through injuries. He’s not near top form. Brasil’s younger players arent quite to the level where they can dominate and take over matches at this level … yet.

Brasil just seemed out of sync, timing-wise, for this WC.

Im not sure there are many or any managers that really could have put more than lipstick on this pig.

FWIW, Norway’s been playing well for a number of matches. They would surprise no one if they ended up making it to the Final 4. They are legit and Haaland’s 2 goals were literally text book for what you would teach a young goal scorer. Its really tough for a GK to stop shots (including headers) that are low and away. Im not sure Haaland (or anyone) could have hit those balls better than he did.

Carlo Ancelotti might be the best manager in the world

by HCE, Sunday, July 05, 2026, 18:31 (16 days ago) @ Mark

Complete exaggeration there, but they were way too respectful. Then again, their forwards play no defense, and their midfield is not very good, so none of this should be a surprise.

Rescinding the suspension is just corruptly weird.

Happy for Balogun.

It was also given in violation of FIFA's VAR protocols

by HCE, Sunday, July 05, 2026, 12:56 (17 days ago) @ PMan

That alone seems like grounds to rescind the suspension, though it's hard to believe that anyone is acting in the interest of fairness here. It all feels gross, even if the end result is correct.

Agreed

by Greg, seemingly ranch, Monday, July 06, 2026, 07:29 (16 days ago) @ HCE

As someone - PMan? - said elsewhere here, it should have been rescinded that night by a competent and non-corrupt FIFA. That would have been fair to the US but also fair to Belgium. That competence and a lack of corruption never came into play, but undue influence and corruption did is pathetic. But it's also FIFA.

I do find UEFA's whining hilarious... as though their teams do not regularly benefit from FIFA's capriciousness.

Word is that the WH called Infantino, who then set up a committee to review. This administration continues to make enemies throughout the world.

Trump may have called, I have no idea (it’s hard when literally everything he ever says is a lie), but all red cards are reviewed by committee in just about every competition: they meet to determine whether it merits additional punishment and, in rare cases, to overturn or ameliorate the punishment.

Do I think FIFA corruption could be at play to avoid “spoiling” the WC for one of the hosts? Totally plausible. But I think it is literally Trump Derangement Syndrome to root against the US because a standard review of a soccer red card found that it had been given with aid from a VAR procedural issue and used a rare-but-on-the-books option to effectively grant probation pending good behavior. (Note that it’s so within their purview that it’s not even be the first time it was used at this WC — they also waived off two of Ronaldo’s three game violent conduct suspension.)

Edit: this should have been a reply below to those rooting against the USMNT due to this.

It would've been so much sweeter to have played without him and won. Now it just seems like karma is going to hand Belgium the win.

all of them completely different. Pointless pretty much to argue this, but red card within the competition should carry a suspension. I didn't see the red, as I was on a plane, but even if wrong, then that is something that is lived with.

Don't like erasing the cards ahead of the tournament like Cristiano's and others, but there was no advantage gained from something that happened a few months before vs. in tournament.

But whatever, FIFA continues to change things all the time for the benefit of their cartel, which is there to enrich its highest administrators.

for his own personal ego gratification.

At worst without Balogun it was a 50/50 game with them in the role of sympathetic underdog.

Now we're the unsympathetic bully who got favorable treatment. If the US wins I couldn't even celebrate because it'd feel like ill-gotten gains.

All this to get smoked by Spain.

Let's pump the brakes a bit.

If we're being honest, the US got a cracker of a group draw in the preliminary round. Does anyone think that was coincidental? Of course it wasn't. But the team has performed close to the best of its capabilities thus far, regardless of opponent (pointless Türkiye game notwithstanding). And I didn't notice anyone waving the flag less enthusiastically the past two weeks bc Infantino greased the wheels on behalf of our potbellied pig of a president.

The reality is that FIFA is and has long been an intensely corrupt operation. Favors have been given to many nations for many different reasons over the years. The US appears to be calling one in now, which is regrettable. But to pretend like we are benefitting from preferential treatment in some unprecedented way is naive, to put it mildly.

Would it be better if Balogun isn't responsible for an American win tomorrow? Sure! Everyone is free to root how they like, but I'm not going to let any of this detract from what USMNT is doing for as long as they're still alive.

Isn’t FIFA just a big cesspool of corruption?

I understand the ref in the US v. BH match was involved in match fixing a couple years ago. (Not sure how he’s allowed to ref any matches let alone matches in the World Cup.)

I don’t feel great about the corruption possibly benefiting us. But it seems hard not to get dirty if this is the pool we’re swimming in.
