TSA airport training

by Jay, San Diego, Sunday, March 22, 2026, 11:11 (125 days ago)

There's a 2-week boot camp, followed by 60 days of on-the-job shadowing in a probationary period. Certification to work independently comes after 3-6 months. But yeah let's throw some ICE goons in there tomorrow.

What makes more sense --

by Mike (Max) ⌂ @, Orlando, Monday, March 23, 2026, 12:13 (124 days ago) @ Jay

funding the TSA in favor of ICE, or paying ICE to stand around airports doing literally nothing while the TSA continues to flounder?

This shit is so stupid but, then again, everything this administration does is stupid.

Can we just get rid of TSA?

by Romulox, Monday, March 23, 2026, 12:01 (124 days ago) @ Jay

I haven't noticed any uptick in shoe bombs now that they let everyone keep them on.

This is the correct answer

by Regular Joseph @, Monday, March 23, 2026, 20:00 (124 days ago) @ Romulox

although the threat of guns on the plane in the old US of A may redeem them.

I don't really understand what this means.

by nedhead @, Monday, March 23, 2026, 20:25 (124 days ago) @ Regular Joseph

Like, people can just board planes without going through X-ray machines? Because that seems pretty crazy.

It might be nice if there were some tweaks and the process were more efficient, but that's a different thing than getting rid of the TSA.

How did we get on planes before 9/11?

by Regular Joseph @, Monday, March 23, 2026, 21:13 (124 days ago) @ nedhead

Nothing is different about the world except cultural expectations. Except I suppose Americans have way more guns and young Arabs have lots more reasons to hate America.

Did you feel unsafe boarding a plane in the 90s? Do you look back on that self as naive?

So people can just take guns on planes?

by nedhead @, Monday, March 23, 2026, 21:18 (124 days ago) @ Regular Joseph

Yeah, I think it's very naive to think that we don't need security screening. Even ignoring the terrorism threat, what about just a drunk guy with a gun? Or one too many ambien with a gun, won't even remember what they've done.

There's a distinction between TSA and "Airport Security"

by irishoutsider @, Tuesday, March 24, 2026, 04:34 (123 days ago) @ nedhead

At least enough of a difference.

There should be screening before you get on a plane.
We should require people to have a boarding pass to enter the terminal.

Do we need to stop everyone for a quick radiology exam and personal body groping?
Do we need to have everyone take off their shoes sometimes, but not in every airport or every scenario?
What about laptops? How are we feeling about those today?

There's layers on this that are just unnecessary beyond basic weapons detection.
It doesn't have to be this way. I'm biased but comparing Heathrow to O'Hare I'll take the former every single time and twice on Sunday.

Right.

by Regular Joseph @, Tuesday, March 24, 2026, 06:22 (123 days ago) @ irishoutsider

There's a difference between a huge federal administration overseen by a "homeland security czar" and a guy checking a boarding pass and asking you to go through a metal detector with a sign that says Huge Fines for Having Guns.

We got to half empty our bags and dump out our water bottles. Old ladies with new hip joints hoping a considerate TSA officer finds them a TSA compliant wheelchair. Get the crotch pat down because you forgot to throw away a kleenex. Wiping for bomb residue. It's all a big charade that only makes people feel more unsafe and justifies a deeper surveillance state.

They aren't even going to do screenings.

by domer.mq ⌂ @, Sunday, March 22, 2026, 18:44 (125 days ago) @ Jay

It's not going to help anything at all, even if they did anything "well." It's just more bodies in already busy airports with crippling security checkpoint issues.

Also, this entire thing was news to ICE until this weekend. There's no planning for this whatsoever.

No screening function - solely there for random beatings

by MattG, Monday, March 23, 2026, 09:22 (124 days ago) @ domer.mq

After our first fatal TSA shooting over a failure to repack liquids and gels into a quart plastic bag, Fox will somberly remind us that the deceased should have complied, and that the agent was scared for his life.

If the alarm goes off, they will just shoot you on sight.

I honestly dont think its safe for any American to be anywhere near ICE and their illegal behavior.

The Fox dirtbags can spin protesters in a negative light, but people traveling thru airports as a normal practice for vacation or work is universally relatable. If there's a sense that regular folks are putting themselves in harm's way simply by going thru airport security, the fallout is going to be terrible in about 18 different ways.

Everything coming from this joke-ass, crook-ass executive office since the jump has been a masterclass in how to get pulverized in the midterms.
