Enough of this BB crap

Who’s watching the wrestling NCAA nationals?
PSU just keeps dominating so far. I’m hanging out with my Dad watching semi-finals.
Really decent production by ESPN showing the top 4 kids all competing to get to the finals at the same time for the semi-final round. Great stuff.
My Dad was keen to point out that the NC’s being in Cleveland (where he grew up) owes a smiddgen of credit to his father (my grandfather) who spent decades organizing tournaments and reffing matches in Ohio and the Cleveland area. Good to see wrestling still going strong there.
I only know one thing about wrestling

The two times in my life I have had my ass absolutely beat... it was by wrestlers. Average guy thinks "hey, I outweigh him by thirty pounds and I think I'm something else." Wrestler says, I will have both your hands pinned down and beat you repeatedly about the face and head.
Lesson learned back in the day. Lesson learned.
One of the starters from my HS BB team thought like that …
by Mark, Saturday, March 21, 2026, 16:24 (13 days ago) @ Busco21
he challenged the kid a weight class above me.
The contest lasted about 30 seconds. The BB kid was on his back in less than 5 seconds and had no idea what to do after that.
It may look easy, but its exhausting and if you dont know what you’re doing … its easy to panic vs someone that’s very comfortable attacking/ fighting with all 4 limbs at the same time.
Normal people square off, throw some haymakers
by Busco21, Saturday, March 21, 2026, 18:48 (13 days ago) @ Mark
I had my good moments, used to be decent at it. But when you square off and ten seconds later both arms are pinned behind your back and you are eating punches.... yeah, don't fight a top end wrestler haha.
Luckily our Fullback in college could literally take a haymaker to the jaw and just smile. He saved me the two times I was getting drilled.
One observation … Oklahoma St rising …

Never would have guessed David Taylor would make such an immediate impact. I’m interested in seeing how well they can progress over the next 5 years …
It’d be great if they could unseat Penn St.
Wrestling is such a unique sport

It actually is one of those sports where the best in the sport can be good coaches and teachers too. The best wrestlers are largely self-selectors. So, you don't deal with prima donna egos, or the shifting trends like "today's sport is different than in my generation." The best guys in the sport are almost always the hardest workers. That makes it easier for a guy like David Taylor. All those guys in the room know who he is, respect him, and want to match his success.
There aren't many LeBrons in the sport.
People thought it was a risk to hire Taylor. But the reality was he was already coaching a ton at his club M2 Training Center while he was still training for international competitions. He really just needed to be surrounded by guys who know the NCAA landscape and some good recruiters. Stillwater was desperate for anyone to take this program to another level. I imagine you will see something similar in Iowa City as the Brand brothers continue to do things the old way that Gable taught.
I think you are right, OSU is putting their stamp on college wrestling right now. And next year's class is stacked too (not quite as good as this year's class but next year's was supposed to include Jax Forrest, which is a tradeoff I think they'll gladly take).
But they have the Raney twins coming in, both are accomplished on the international circuit in Greco and freestyle. They have DreShaun Ross. Rocklin Zinklin, who just won the toughest HS bracket in America in California. So, they are definitely stockpiling.
The issue is that they are just trying to make a dent into PSU's armor. Certainly, they are closing the gap. But take 133 for example. Marcus Blaze is the starter. PSU had Aaron Nagao, who was an All American his frosh year. They had to bump him to 141 and even then he was going to have to take another redshirt year. Why? Because the back up at 133, who is also redshirting, is a world champion. Masanosuke Ono had a ridiculous off season including beating Spencer Lee at an exhibition in Iowa. Those 3 guys are all legitimate All Americans, each with a possibility to win the title at 133.
Similar issue at 125 with Lilledal and Nate Desmond. Same thing at 141 with Braeden Davis and now Aaron Nagao. Similar issue at 157 where Messenbrink's back up is Joe Sealey who won 2 prep national championships. At 174 they have Henckel backing up national champion Levi Haynes.
I don't understand how they get these guys to stay. All of their backups would be starting at nearly every program in the country.
And if they are ever light on a weight class? They go to the portal and get a guy like Rocco Welsh who was undefeated all year and was upset in the national championship.
Oklahoma St. is going to certainly elevate the program as the leading contender but I just don't see how anyone dethrones Penn St. as long as the talent continues to stay in State College. And how can you blame them? They just had 5 national champions in another ho-hum season for them.
This really makes me wonder about NIL in wrestling

Someone is going to go after stealing/winning talent away from PSU and Oklahoma St and Iowa have the historical pedigree.
Here’s the historical data (only 12 schools have won wrestling NC’s):
The "Big Six" (Multiple Titles): These programs have defined the different eras of college wrestling:
- Oklahoma State: 34 titles
- Iowa: 24 titles
- Penn State: 14 titles (including the 2026 championship won this past weekend)
- Iowa State: 8 titles
- Oklahoma: 7 titles
- Minnesota: 3 titles
The "Single Title" Winners: Only six other programs in history have managed to climb to the top of the mountain for a single season:
- Arizona State (1988)
- Ohio State (2015)
- Michigan State (1967)
- Northern Iowa (1950)
- Cornell College (Iowa) (1947) — Notably the only private school to ever win.
- Indiana (1932)
If David Taylor and team can at least make the team balance between PSU and Okla St competitive than I could see other schools trying to mimic the competition. I’m really surprised schools like tOSU and UM (with their huge fan bases) havent identified donors to make more wrestling NIL deals for their programs. You know they dont like seeing PSU dominate the Big 10.
The NC would definitely be a lot more interesting if PSU had some competition.
Cleveland is a great wrestling town

I’ve been to probably 15 NCAA tourneys (including in Cleveland a few years ago). The local enthusiasm for college wrestling is as high there as it is anywhere outside of maybe Iowa City and Pennsylvania.
Unfortunately watching from my couch in Omaha this year. Highlights from last night …
- Bastida, the heavyweight from Iowa State, is a beast. Haven’t seen anyone just kick Ferrari’s butt like that.
- Caliendo from Iowa is such a tough kid. Gutsy semifinal win. I think his odds of beating Mesenbrink tonight are 1 in 5,000, but who knows, maybe he’ll catch him in a throw and pull it off.
- This is as talented of a group of freshmen as I’ve seen. We could very well have, what, four freshmen champs? Insane.
- Okie State may be ready to rip the crown from Cael and company. Won’t happen this year but the Pokes are as deep as anyone.
- Very cool to see Stanford finish top ten this year, just six years from nearly getting cut. The ACC move probably helped their wrestling program.
- Same with Wyoming. I think they are like 12th, which has to be close to a high water mark. Mark Branch is one of my all-time favorite wrestlers.
- I wish my fellow Nebraska citizens would pay attention to what Mark Manning has built in Lincoln. But if it doesn’t have to do with volleyball, no one seems to care around here.
- The Gable-Smith-Kennedy Blades commercial is great.
Hoping to attend in person next year in STL.

Some thoughts

We talked about it before, and the announcers brought it up last night, but Shane Griffith single handedly resurrected that program after it was cut during COVID. Wrestling in a plain black singlet with a hoodie that read "KEEP STANFORD WRESTLING," he created a powerful movement among Stanford alum to restore the program in 2021. It's a damn shame because Real Woods' lifelong dream was to go to Stanford but he couldn't afford not to wrestle and that fortune turned out to be Iowa's.

Like you, I am so happy to see Wyoming sneak in there at #12. A lot of people love Mark Branch. Joey Novak! And Laramie can be an impossible place to recruit. But there are like 2 sports Wyoming does well in (or at least outkicks their coverage): rodeo and wrestling.
Surprised to see Illinois at 15. A lot of their heaving hitters just ran into hammers. But they'll be back.
I always like seeing the small schools that turn out

a winner or two.
Northern Iowa?
Lehigh?
Slippery Rock?
Or any of the Ivies … Stanford, UPenn, Princeton etc
If Ben Davino got screwed I was ready to explode

We had a kid from our HS qualify at 174. Fought his ass off and lost in triple OT in his first round match.
My boss told me Vegas wouldn’t even accept bets on PSU winning (before the tournament started) and would only take bets on 2nd place.
