So I gave my resignation letter yesterday.

3 months short of 18 years and it's time for a change.

"The person" I report to, I refuse to refer to her as anything else, sits in an office about 25 feet away from me & since February 11th, the person has spoken to me face to face once.

"The person" has been here about 2 1/2 and tried to pass assignments to me thru a co-worker and then again thru another co-worker after that first co-worker left.

Both of those people left here within the last 2 years, at least 75% because of "the person".

I've had three conversations with the owner about this and it obviously hasn't improved.
She seemed sad, disappointed and hoped I'd reconsider when we talked yesterday but as they
(A brother and sister own the company) have no intention of addressing the issue, it's time to go.

I'm not going to ask for prayers but some good thoughts would be cool.

*Edit: Of course I could just be an asshole but I did want to add that "the person" told the first co-worker, when the replacements were being interviewed that "the person" didn't want two men working for her. So of the three, the guy was eliminated for being male.
And the one that was hired left after about 6 months (We haven't had a true AP person in the position since last March) started therapy and medication because the job was stressing her out so much.
The new AP person started yesterday and I wasn't even introduced.

Good luck. I bet it works out.

I would give anyone who has worked 18 years in one spot and left on his own a very serious look for any position that fit his skills and experience.

Unfortunately, the owners will figure out after you're gone what a disaster "the person" is because they'll lose everybody good who reports to her. When I have been in management positions I have always taken it seriously when long-term employees (professionally) raise concerns like yours. One, you can maybe put down to personality issues but more than one and there's probably an issue.

Likely, "the person" is intimidated by long-term employees (especially men, it appears) reporting to her. "A" managers want "A" people working for them. "B" and "C" managers are worried about being shown up and want less competent newbies working for them.

You’ve pretty much hit the nail on the head.

We had about a 90 minute meeting today; with the owner and her and a couple people from purchasing and a couple people from customer service who can fill in for some of the things I do until they hire somebody.

Neither person in purchasing is a big fan of hers and have reported what I consider serious issues with her work.
Nothing “wrong” but certainly not best practices when it comes to accounting; and they have basically been overlooked.
Well in the meeting they both brought up an issue or two as it would relate to the accounting dept. moving forward.
She had a brief conversation, but I was told “heated” with the owner after the meeting was over and left for the rest of the day.
Leaving the new AP person, who has been there for now three days, in the lurch.

Perhaps the owners are starting to figure it out --

the way you describe the shop it's too small to "hide" someone and avoid making an unpleasant personnel decision. Losing someone with your experience and longitudinal view of the organization would really worry me if I were an owner.

Sounds like the right move. Best of luck.

Been in a less-than-constructive job culture before - it just weighs on you. Good for you getting out. Best of luck in your search for the next role. Feel free to reach out if there's anything I can help with.

congrats!

Gutsy move, Chris. Life is too short to be miserable.

One job I had when I was 25 was supposed to be a "dream job." Was making pennies and working legit 110 hours a week. My boss was horrible. I lost 30 pounds. Wasn't sleeping. Lost all self confidence.

Ended up quitting. Went to therapy. Started eating normally again. Found another job in like 3 weeks. Not saying that this will be your experience. But it was a positive move all around. You'll be better for it in the future.

My first full time legal job was miserable.

The boss was a complete asshole (ND grad too), destroyed my confidence, and made me hate work. Getting out of there was the best thing that ever happened to me career and mental health wise.

(What city was it in?)

Did we have the same first legal job? Was it Chicago?

Hah. No, it was far east of Chicago.
