In defense of BK
I get the chip on his shoulder. He wasn't born to (football) privilege and didn't get handed an elite job as a career entry point (ala Kiffin). Dude worked his way up from DC at lowly Assumption College, where he had to hand water the practice field, and rose to become the head coach at ND and LSU.
If BK didn't have that chip, I doubt his career ends anywhere near the LSU or ND jobs.
He stopped growing and innovating
It’s the death knell for any career. Oh, and recruiting matters.
He got paid shit tons of money to go away. The lack of self reflection is astounding.

He could have done all this so much more gracefully
He knew he was on the back half of his career before he left ND. He wanted more years on an extension than Swarbrick was willing to give. So he went and took his golden parachute without realizing all the work he'd need to do in order to succeed.
He could have played out the string at ND, left when it was time, and probably transitioned into a TV gig if he wanted. But he couldn't help himself. Because he's an asshole. And now he's largely going to be a pariah at every school he coached, and no network will touch him. Because he's an asshole.
Leopards don't change their spots.
Even if he did everything in exactly the same way!
Just go on TV and say something like
I had a great run at ND. I’ll always love this place. But ultimately, I didn’t accomplish what I’d set out to do here, and I don’t think 5 more years of this is best for ND or for me. It’s time to let someone else with a new approach take a shot. And im taking on a new challenge in the SEC, which is best for me; too. I’m fired up. Time to go win a title. Go Irish and we’ll see you down the road.”

People might still be annoyed that he left for another school, but that annoyance would have 100% evaporated by now, due largely to Freeman's success. No one in their right mind would go back in time and keep Kelly for a few more years at the risk of losing Freeman.

But I'm not convinced that he's a network pariah. They hire fired coaches all the time and BK was actually pretty good with commentary the times that I saw him on ESPN.
He's now pretty unlikeable by just about everyone
Unless he's willing to play some sort of "villain" role on a show, I wouldn't think anyone would want to put him on their broadcasts.

He's well within his rights to feel like he got shafted.
He should just enjoy the money.
He really could have engineered an amicable exit from ND. Everyone was probably cool w him leaving, they just didn’t want to be caught flat-footed.
At the same time, I guess LSU wasn’t gonna wait around forever and that offer needed a signature… and if it was known he was leaving ND anyways he’d be less of a hot commodity than if they were “stealing” him.

Him waiting until after the season to make a move seems almost quaint.
Multiple things can be true
1. He left ND poorly.
2. He was treated unfairly or unrealistically by LSU.
3. He should enjoy his financial windfall.
4. He should be more comfortable with the silence.
