Pulled some of the passing depth stats on both players from PFF in an effort to see differences in how they each performed under Denbrock, and maybe give some hints as to how Carr will fare.

Daniels definitely put the ball down the field a lot more than Leonard: 38% over 10+ versus 28% for Leonard. Deep shots (20+) were significantly more as well.

Leonard had a bunch more throws behind the LOS.

were likely hampered by the opposing defense not paying much attention to downfield risk so when our guys made short catches, it wasn’t like there was a lot of open space to do much. I’m hopeful that Faison and Greathouse (and Pauling and Love) can do a lot more with those kinds of catches this year as we at least have some ability to stress the defense with the risk of bigger plays downfield.

...it took me a long time before I opened the calculator and worked it out. Does anyone know why the attempt percentages for the QBs don't add up to 100 and don't even add up to the same number?

I was going to make some comments based on a facial comparison of the numbers, but when I started trying to get into a second level of comparison I realized that something wasn't working. Then Microsoft's calculator did the rest.

I remember watching the Purdue game and thinking that it seemed like we were going back to remedial Passing 101. Most everything for Leonard was thrown within 10 yards of the LOS, lot of flat passes and easy stuff to the tight ends. Seemed like a pronounced effort to focus on the basics against a shitty opponent and rebuild the QB's confidence. And then he sort of loosened the reins from there, but only very gradually.

Been said before, but I'd love to have a second year with Leonard at QB like Denbrock did with Daniels.

I think with another year of Leonard -- or heck, maybe with Carr -- we'd see confidence in throwing more passes like this one to Greathouse at the end of the 3Q. It's not like Greathouse has good separation or anything, but it's 15+ yards downfield and Leonard just gets it out there for Jaden to make a play.

Not to be greedy, but...

Would be very curious to see what those look like. Ridder was solid but he was no Jayden Daniels, and for that matter Alec Pierce was no Malik Nabers either. In that sense it might be more comparable to 2025 ND than 2023 LSU was, although obviously 2023 LSU still shows kind of the "perfect world" vision of Denbrock's offense.

Also, guessing the're no 2015 ND info available at PFF, but off memory I would say Denbrock was Bomb City with Kizer and Fuller. He definitely likes to air it out when he thinks he can.

Hartman and Evans had some connections in the deep middle in '23. But with the threat of Love/Price, and the potential for sideline shots, Raridon should have TONS of room to operate down the seam this year. I doubt Carr will be shy about pulling that particular trigger.
