Speaking of housing, I’ll bet you never thought
Tracey Graham one day would have a dorm named after him.
I agree with you 100%. Intergrating the athletes with the student body is one the greatest things about ND - for the both those athletes and those of us who could barely not trip over our own feet.
I roomed with a football player second semester freshman year, and two future NBA players were in my section in Dillon Hall.
I heard an interview with Benjamin Morrison driving to the FSU game in November. He loves ND. When he said in the interview that his closest friends were dormmates, not players on the team, I wanted to virtually hug him. That’s the Notre Dame I know and love.
Lake and I were the only ones...
in the fall of 1990 on the entire 3rd floor of Flanner, or at least in the section, who had an 8am class MWF. Everybody else was sleeping.
He got stuck with one as a freshman and football player I imagine. I got stuck with one because of stupid DART and the fact I was in Rome on the SMC program at registration time, and got terrible class times in classes I only half wanted because everything good was already full: both an 8am MWF and a late afternoon MWF.
Lake and I hardly talked of course as we got ready for the day, and mostly felt sorry for each other.
TG is amazing

Freeman's got so much riz they need to call him Aura Parseghian
Oh man
Lake was a junior when I was a frosh.
And then as a soph I moved from 3B to 3A and lived next to him, Clint Johnson, Leon Wallace, Tracey Graham and another guy or two. They were great neighbors. I think the experience with them is what makes me think ND should continue to push to have athletes stay in regular housing as long as they can.

The 2007 ND-UCLA game was a once in a lifetime experience, I hope
Reminds me of the scenario when Vinny Cerrato left.
A lot of smoke but nothing concrete.
Lake was a freshman on 3rd floor Flanner…
when I was a junior. Lake at 53 makes me very old…
Maybe an example from the Athletic article?
“He was once thrown out of the South Bend airport for blasting a boom box to welcome recruits as they left security..” May have been wildly effective but I could see the Admin raising an eyebrow or two.
Shane Gillis is the guy we need
If they ever make a movie about Freeman
Then Bowden would be played by Jonah Hill

Genuinely don’t understand
How he scored that Athletic gig. That place isn’t perfect but they have lots of excellent people working there. Not an exaggeration to say that he might be the worst.
think of the dumbest talking head on espn
and Jim Bowden is dumber in the Athletic. His every column proposes trades that are dumber than Donald Trump executive orders.
We also gave a big raise when Michigan went for him
At some point if a guy keeps testing the market and wanting you to match, you need to move on.
I’d still love to know what that means

I ask the same question of myself all the time

That market also says he's not great
If he were, ND would have ponied up. Shades of Mike Elko here. If we didn't outbid, there's a reason, and it's not a lack of funds or commitment from Freeman and Bevacqua.
How the hell is Lake Dawson 53?
- No text -
That would indicate
a further separation of the role of recruiting director and the role of general manager. Dawson would fit the latter role to a T, and then Freeman could get a younger, Bowden type of energizer bunny to play Xbox with the high school kids.
Awesome

I hope Riley coaches SC for another decade.
He's a grade-A pussy who will never restore that program to where they aspire to be. Will we lose a few talented recruits to them due to the Bowden hire? Probably! Will they ever come back to haunt us as Trojans? Doubt it!
I'd be more concerned if SC hired a coach with a strong defensive background like Carroll.
Keeping Riley around longer is probably good for ND

Potential replacement, per some paysites
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Dawson
Don't think he would jump for a pay raise from USC.
That is my phrasing
Not much specific was spelled out
Its interesting too considering he was instrumental
In pushing Powlus out of the football operation. Since we're hearing rumors about the lack of professionalism there too (not necessarily from Bowden, but more from Powlus).
if we recruit at the level we want and need to
every major program will have very talented people who are a pain in our ass. So we might as well just get used to it.
Wonder what that means
"a lack of consistently smooth professional behavior"
That could be all kinds of things. Did he dance on tables at parties?

Supposedly an expert tamperer
who's a big part of the reason why we wrapped up Hartman and Leonard so quickly and seamlessly.
think he helped in the transfer portal too

Some chatter on the paid message boards
The last few weeks highlighting his supposed deficiencies, including a lack of consistently smooth professional behavior. So this maybe doesn’t come out of the blue?
If he's doing that with Smith
Perhaps he knows something about Mickens future employment?
The biggest negative aspect of this to me
isn't that it hurts ND but that it throws Riley a lifeline. I want that guy to keep failing hard, and the addition of Bowden increases the chances (even if slightly) that he'll turn the ship around. Plus, Bowden is going to be pain in our ass on the recruiting trail. There already are rumors that he's trying to flip Chaston Smith in the 2026 class.
Yeah
Freeman definitely needed a consigliere early on while he figured things out, and the universe of qualified people willing to risk coming on with him was probably nowhere near as large as now. Bowden did a great job but the train is on the tracks now
That salary range is just bonkers, by the way
Maybe in a few years, that position will be worthy of that kind of salary. But Good Lord.
I’m just a “meh” on this
- biggest contribution was probably reducing Powlus’s importance in the back office football work
- he was probably important early in Freeman’s tenure to getting stuff he wanted, but Freeman has way more clout now and Pete B seems laser focused on bringing the funds to make it happen
- there’s probably better personnel directors out there at that salary range

I have a soft spot in my heart for Jim Bowden
It was he who traded Paul Konerko to the White Sox.
Here's the picture of Paulie trotting to first after htting his grand slam in the World Series, that inspired his statue:
![[image]](https://static01.nyt.com/images/2014/09/11/sports/Y-JP-KONERKO-2/Y-JP-KONERKO-2-articleLarge.jpg?quality=75&auto=webp&disable=upscale)
Not that family
But his dad is Jim Bowden, former GM of the Reds, who still writes blowhard pieces for The Athletic and is basically wrong about everything he says.
I'm sure KGB has some choice thoughts about him.
Jim Bowden the baseball exec

He's from THAT Bowden family? Did not know that
Was Bobby his grandfather? Who's his daddy?
Gotta say there's a part of me
That's glad he's not around any more. Not a big fan of that family, and he always seemed like a super self-promoter.
Hopefully Freeman can fill this spot fast. I'm sure it has to be considered attractive.
Of course, chalk this up as one more reason why the NFL might start looking a lot better to Marcus sooner rather than later.
go get Dre Brown to come back

Freeman's got so much riz they need to call him Aura Parseghian
The market suggests he's damn good
First guy Freeman brought from Cincy, steadily promoted since then, one of the first guys Moore pursued at Michigan, personally recruited by Riley at USC.
It's disappointing that he sold out to our rival and didn't see things through at ND (he repeatedly has predicted that Freeman will win a title).
He gone.

is Bowden particularly good at the job?
Or is it just good we have somebody in the job?
