I was thinking about Freeman today

He has done a great job so far this season and we still don’t know what his ceiling is, but it is hard to think that he is not already a top-10 college coach.
Smart, Day, and Dabo have definitely accomplished more, though I’d take Freeman over Dabo going forward. After that, it’s hard to find another coach who is definitively better. Maybe Sark or Lanning, but that’s about it. Heupel isn’t, and Cignetti has potential, but I can’t find 10 college coaches better than Freeman right now, and he’s only 38 years old.

Coordinators looking to move up
have to bet on themselves while being very shrewed & selective with their job moves.
Freeman got a major coaching gig at 35 largely due to shrewed moves and divine timing. Even if ND hadn't hired him UVA or some other school would have.
EB was OC under Reid and had Mahomes as his QB, and nobody gave him any credit for KCs offense. At best he got token interviews. He had to get out from under Reid to prove himself. His first move ended up in a 4-12 season with the HC getting bounced. His second attempt ended up with him getting ousted after 1yr.
"Back to the NFL" sure. But it almost certainly won't be coordinators job after his last two stints.
