He had his McCartney right there in his band

If he could have gotten past the heroin, and recognized that his band was VERY capable of easing his songwriting burden, they could have been the Rock Beatles.

His drummer was the most prolific and successful rock songwriter of the next 25 years after his death!

Imagine songs from “the colour and the shape” and “echoes silence patience and grace” getting a little bit of extra Cobain gravel and depth and making up half of the songs credited to “Cobain/Grohl”.

We’d also get all of the greatness Kurt would have churned out once he was operating at full capacity, with the weirdness tempered by Dave’s genius for pop/rock melodies.

We’d all be parsing the lyrics, figuring out who wrote what. “Kurt is nonsensical and cool, Dave had more pop sensibility, the big anthems are his.”

Mostly I think that the angst and darkness in the songs would have turned into a “cooler” version of the hyper-prolific “happier”stuff the Foos did from 1995-present. Grohl still would have found his voice, they would have been Lennon/McCartney or at least Henley/Frey.

IMO it’s the biggest what-if / missed opportunity in rock history.
