FBS programs over the last 50 years, ND included. I'd love to see ND try to get four of the others (certainly no fewer than three of the others), two home and two away, on the schedule each year.
Here's the list of the other 22:
Ohio State
Nebraska
Penn State
Michigan
Oklahoma
Texas
Alabama
Georgia
Florida
Tennessee
Auburn
LSU
Arkansas
Texas A&M
USC
UCLA
Arizona State
Florida State
Miami
Clemson
BYU
Boise State
For the published future schedules, we only have three from the list on each:
2017 - 3 (Georgia, USC, Miami)
2018 - 3 (Michigan, FSU, USC)
2019 - 3 (Georgia, USC, Michigan)
Looking ahead at future schedules beyond, 2024 and 2025 are in line with what I would prefer. I'm not sure how many open slots remain on these, especially in 2021 which currently only has two from the list:
2020 - 3 (Arkansas, USC, Clemson)
2021 - 2 (FSU, USC)
2022 - 3 (OSU, Clemson, USC)
2023 - 3 (OSU, Clemson, USC)
2024 - 4 (A&M, FSU, Miami, USC)
2025 - 4 (A&M, Arkansas, Miami, USC)
I think games against a few others not on that "best 22 of the last 50 years list" would be interesting as well, especially those we haven't played in a while or ever. But I wouldn't prioritize this list over the one above: Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Washington, Utah, Oregon, Wisconsin, Colorado, Oklahoma State, Iowa, Arizona, South Carolina, Ole Miss are all P5 programs above .500 vs FBS teams over the last 50 years. A few others like Stanford, Louisville, Michigan State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, NC State, and Pittsburgh are also above .500 in the span but are more familiar foes.

by Jeff (BGS)
, A starter home in suburban Tempe, Friday, July 07, 2017, 13:32 (3190 days ago) @ CK08
I seem to remember that ND had an amazing record against teams in the first every matchup, with ND winning something like 90% of the games. I suspect that has dropped off to 80-85% in the last 10 years.

But that place makes my skin crawl. There's no way to have a consistent standard, but Ole Miss is just one of those places I'd rather ND have nothing proactive to do with (bowls and such a different story).
I hear you and it crossed my mind.
by Grantland, y'allywood, Friday, July 07, 2017, 09:12 (3190 days ago) @ HullieAndMikes
Ole Miss certainly has a stigma. I assume you are talking racism - or maybe just how corrupt the program appears to be?
But I am not sure why they have a worse reputation than South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia...
I understand this is anecdotal, when I think of my "most racist" friends, about 4 GAtech guys come to mind.
If you are talking about corruption, then...

It's long use of Colonel Reb, etc., etc. It's a very symbolic hothouse for a lot of bad historical stuff that it surely was not the sole culprit of (Wallace standing in the door at Bama), but played an outsized role in.
At the risk of getting too political...

...there's ugly shit happening in a lot of different parts of the country right now, ugly shit going on at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. I suppose that reasonable minds can disagree, but I have no inclination to hold something over the head of a school like Ole Miss in particular based on anachronisms that are fairly pervasive throughout the deep south. Hell, I was back home a couple weeks ago and drove past a house that had an image of a Confederate flag hanging in the front window. I'd like to think that the asshole living there realizes that Ohio is not and never was part of the fucking South, but it's increasingly difficult to discern honest stupidity from conscious hatred.
Now if we were talking about scheduling Baylor or Penn State, well, those guys can get fucked.
Yeah. The articles are interesting to me.
by Greg, seemingly ranch, Friday, July 07, 2017, 11:50 (3190 days ago) @ KGB
Based on what I read today after seeing the posts and links here, recent leadership (like, 1990s and onward) at Ole Miss seems intent on divorcing the school and its teams from symbols of the past and from the ugly realities of the Civil Rights era. I see no problem in playing that institution. We all have our scars past ugliness, and it's what's going on today that matters most to me.

It's complicated.
by irishvol
, Music City, USA, Friday, July 07, 2017, 14:08 (3190 days ago) @ Greg
I think the institution as a whole has attempted to make some positive steps over the last 15 or so years. The school built the statue of James Meredith. Confederate Drive is no more. A plaque was added to the Confederate Monument on campus, providing some historical context and explicitly stating that the school currently welcomes all who want to learn. Colonel Reb is gone and Dixie's no longer sung, at least officially. These may not be sufficient, but they're at least steps in the right direction.
But, to be frank, changing the attitude of an entire population isn't going to happen overnight. That doesn't excuse boorish behavior or racist attitudes, but at least provides some context. For every one of these positive steps by the school's administration, there's been significant opposition by some student groups and alums. You'll still see a large number of confederate flags around town and on campus, more than I've seen in other Southern towns.
Ole Miss isn't too far from where I grew up, and I crossed paths with a fair number of alums. I've met some great people who went to school there. And I've met some real racist duds. I feel like things are starting to change a bit there, and the school admin always condemns racist actions when they occur. But they still happen...
As I said, it's complicated.
Frankly, there are other reasons that I wouldn't rank Ole Miss near the top of my "to play" list. Its fans are generally arrogant people. They generally have an inflated opinion of their historical significance in the world of college football. And the Grove is nice but far from its portrayal as the mythical tailgating heaven. It's tailgating underneath trees. I'd much rather be in Athens on gameday.
Mississippi only ratified the 13th amendment four years ago

Does Ole Miss fly the state flag anywhere? EDIT: Apparently they are refusing. Good for them.
![]()
There's levels of culpability to this. Of course, if one were to draw a bright line, ND couldn't play UNC (with Silent Sam) or Georgetown (who is trying to make amends). Ole Miss just makes me uncomfortable on a significant level.
My father is buried in a (private) cemetery with a lot of Confederate dead, and I struggle with the right thing to do in such cases. I was there last week though, and thought it was notable that they have now switched out a once prominent battle flag (stars and bars) for the less recognizable CSA one.
I'm glad people are starting to reckon with these things, though.
This stuff is so ingrained. And I am getting way off T now.
by Grantland, y'allywood, Friday, July 07, 2017, 12:29 (3190 days ago) @ HullieAndMikes
Go look at our (Georgia's) flag and then go look at the Flag of the Confederate States of America. I cant get the images to work here.
Political: What worries me so much about Trump is not so much Trump himself (fucking idiot) but that 35% of our population (including many very otherwise smart, reasonable people very close to me) are racists. You have to be a racist, misogynistic, etc. to support T.
On Jewish: Just last night I am at dinner with a friend who is smarter than shit but also crazy. The topic of a local Contractor who went out of business comes up. Mind you, this Contractor falsified affidavits, forged lien waivers, and diverted construction draws to his own personal use.
My friend defends the guy and goes of on a long history of the Fed Reserve, how the Jews control the $$$$ flow (and I happen to know) he is getting ready to bring it all the way back to blame the Jews for the Contractor's problems - I kid you not. I suspected another guy we were with might be Jewish and start kicking my guy under the table and texting him. He stopped at "the Jews laughing at the stupid Goyim."
Two of my friend's very best friends are Jewish. Just so complicated (to me anyway). How can he fool himself so?

Had an interesting (actually, depressing) conversation with a classmate of mine at the reunion a few weeks ago. She lives in Columbus with her Jewish husband. They had to move to a new house last year due to anti-semitic crap from their former neighbors. Had been building for a few years, but they finally got sick of it and pulled the rip cord. I don't know Columbus at all, but they landed in what she described as a much more diverse part of town, and are much happier for it.
Not too surprised.
by KGB, Belly o. the Beast, Friday, July 07, 2017, 13:07 (3190 days ago) @ Jay
Just because I believe that it's no longer a geographical, north/south issue and that a lot of cities and communities are now highly-divided in ways unlike we've ever seen. Columbus metro has a vibrant LGBT element and a surprising amount of racial diversity; on the whole, it's one of the more welcoming and inclusive communities I've come across. But I'm also sure that there are certain suburbs or neighborhoods that skew in a different direction with plenty of retrograde bullshit.
The intrusion and saturation of media in most of our daily lives thru TV, internet, social media, et al, have made it such that your POV often has less to do with where you are physically than electronically. What are you watching, who are you listening to, etc.
Do you know the name of the former neighborhood?

by Larry, Enemy Territory, Thursday, July 06, 2017, 14:46 (3191 days ago) @ HCE
There's a story that goes back into the decades, a faded tale that lingers on the human psyche like the sunlight-soaked corner of a long-forgotten cottage curtain. Four men, not soldiers of the apocalypse, but warriors battling against it, against its ghoulish army, slimy and scary and spooky.
Ghostbusters.
They wore brown jumpsuits in the City that Never Sleeps, the Big Apple spilling forth with post-life worms. They battle the world's demons, healing the planet's wounds, Ecto-1 their chariot against purgatory's barbarians.
On a sweltering Tallahassee afternoon, the down-South sweat that makes a man feel alive and dead all at once, there was a new Winston exorcising ghosts. Jameis Winston, not a literal descendent of Winston Zedmore but surely a spiritual one, turned his arm into a veritable proton pack, ripping apart a team whose lifeline is the ghastly afterlife, whose fields is the grass of a cemetery made alight by countless candles offered up to spirits and saints in the Grotto.
"I ain't afraid of no Irish," said Winston.
Total protonic reversal.
