Can we set a tone for the board on ESPN?

Yes, they're low brow entertainment. Yes, they make a ton of mistakes. However, the constant ESPN bashing and the insults to anyone that mentions anything from ESPN is counterproductive.

They are the most powerful medium in sports. They bring us down in football because the competitor owns us but they're quite nice when we're playing road games. We need to live with them, they have more reporters, more columns, more information for free than anyone. I don't think it's going to hurt our independent status to allow links here without the throwaway ESPN sucks comment each time.

Bashing of individual columnists still encouraged.

Also, sorry if this post sucks, I have a splitting headache.

In general ...

I think you'll see a lot less bashing on this board than on others. The purpose is to have civil, intelligent discussion about ND football, and the people here are sharp enough to separate ESPN's wheat from its chaff.

people here are smart

They're SMART. Not dumb. They're SMART and they want respect!

In short, agreeance.

I think everybody here knows the score.

One question

That is the key.

We all know and understand what espn(OK, my one little concession) is all about. Ratings. Bashing ND brings ratings and praising ND brings ratings. So, what they do will never stop.

Exactly!

ESPN bashes ND because they're guaranteed to attract viewers. Half will watch to enjoy ND's abuse, while the other half will watch to get angered about the coverage.

I see no reason why ESPN articles should be prohibited here. As long as the article has some content worth discussing, I say post it. If it's just some hair-pulling article by Scoop Jackson, then don't post it.

The key is to avoid the hair-pulling BS

Alas, it pervades all too much of ESPN's college FB coverage, with Mark May at the top (bottom?) of that list. I don't expect to see posts here along the lines of "Did you hear what May said about us *this* time? What a jerk!!!1!!" Or "f*** Lupica and everyone else on Sports Reporters!!!!1!!" There are rare instances when even that can't be avoided -- e.g., the Saunders interview with Willingham, which was newsworthy as an outright attempt to defame and sabotage ND. But otherwise, I expect those who post here to be smart enough to avoid the bait.
