Random musings on Corwin and Tenuta

First of all, Corwin Brown has shown incredible humility, loyalty and teamwork by staying flexible through all these changes over the last few years. He has shown he is willing to put winning and his development as a coach over his own title and responsibilities. I'm not saying he's been castrated, because he hasn't, but he's been a very self-confident team player from day one. He's a class act.

After leaving the coaching clinic last year, I was 100% confident we would be running Tenuta's defense, with Tenuta making the calls. I've got to admit, I assumed Tenuta was in fact making the defensive calls last year even after it was reported CB was doing it.

If what we've read today is true, it was still CB calling the D on game day. While I have all the respect and admiration in the world for CB, I don't believe it could have been easy for him to digest all of JT's knowledge and execute the defensive gameplan on the fly, that is, call the shots.

Most of you know I have unnatural feelings for Jon Tenuta. He's the last Bad Ass. Oh, I know there are still random old school coaches (it sounds like we might have just gotten one for the DL), but there is only one Bad Ass. He's such a Bad Ass, it doesn't matter what you think of his schemes. If you met him, you'd immediately turn to the guy next to you and say "Um, that guy's a Bad Ass".

I am now filled with the optimism that not only are we going to have these young defenders coming back with another year of experience in BA's system under their belts, but we'll also benefit from all his experience as a defensive play caller as well.

I'm seeing rainbows and unicorns right now. And I only see rainbows and unicorns when offensive players are seeing stars. I want carnage. Kill 'em all, let God sort 'em out.

I would love to see Charlie in the booth and Brown running things down on the field while Tenuta calls the defensive shots, but unfortunately, where does that leave Brown?

He's in a sort-of coaching no-man's land right now. Tenuta is the DC, Weis is the OC AND the HC and that leaves Corwin as DB coach and kick-ass recruiter.

What I would love to see is a chain of command chart. Can Corwin overrule a decision from Tenuta? Can Corwin overrule a decision from Weis regarding the defense if Weis is in the booth?

In a perfect world I'd love to see Weis in the booth, Tenuta calling the shots for the D and Corwin managing the players on the field with veto power over Tenuta on D. Would that make Weis only the OC and make Brown HC? I dunno. I don't think I'd want that either. I think we're in a pickle here, and unfortunately I think it's going to cost us Brown at the end of the year if not sooner. I hope I'm wrong.

What Tenuta can do that Brown couldn't...

was he can afford, from a career perspective, to make mistakes. And he wont make a lot that a newer DC would make anyway, but these days a lot of his mad-scientist abilities are built on a foundation of great success. Sometimes he might make a nutso call that gets beat, but most, even among ND fans, will recognize that of all the people who could be making insane blitz calls, Tenuta is the guy you want making them.

Brown still has rep to build, and as a result, might have played his cards a little tighter than Tenuta will.

I also think Brown has a lot to gain here. This further builds his resume in the direction of HC. We'll be lucky if we get to keep Brown more than a couple more years. If Haywood could get a HC gig like he did, then I suspect Brown wont have any trouble getting some interviews in 2010/11.

You are a moron

but I agree with this post. I think Corwin Brown has proven that he is the most valuable asset on Weis's staff repeatedly. He is a fine position coach, a good defensive mind, and a true team player and leader. I am so happy he is on this staff.

If the young LBs prosper under Tenuta, I think we will see a pretty good defense next year, perhaps the best of the Weis era. Once we get a DL coach on board, this group will be ready to bust out.

You are a tool

and I've never liked you. Your parents tried repeatedly to give you up for adoption, but never had enough cash to convince anyone to take you.

That being said, good luck tomorrow. We're all counting on you...

They let the two of you in here?

But I agree 100% that Corwin is a keeper.

I would imagine he will be getting a head coaching offer shortly. If his alma mater is smart---he will be at the top of the list when DickRod fails.

Two?

Egad.

My dream...

besides being on a superstar coaching staff with Tool 1 & Tool 2, is that Corwin takes a job somewhere, has success, then comes home (eff Michigan, ND is his home now), to replace Charlie after a couple of NC's.

Yes, I'm an optimist. Life is so much more enjoyable that way, isn't it Terrance... oh wait...

Not bad

I would love to see Corwin follow Charlie.

He is going to be a winner.

I hope this doesn't sound too simplistic...

because they're all young A-A with a defensive background (specifically secondary), but I think Brown has a little Mike Tomlin in him. Raheem Morris of the Bucs is another example. Young coaches without a lot of experience who are fiery, relate to players well and seem like natural leaders of men. Assuming that's what we have in Brown, I'd actually prefer Weis to be in the booth.

Whatever it takes for our offense to look like it did versus

Hawaii, I'm all for it. If Weis has to sacrifice a goat on the sideline during every pregame warmup, fine, do it.
