Steve Spurrier stirs it up, addresses Urban Meyer-Notre Dame rumors

The Head Ball Coach always knew how to tweak. And no, the Urban Meyer-Notre Dame talks will never vanish.

South Carolina Coach Steve Spurrier spent almost an hour on the Paul Finebaum Radio Network this week, and during the session he brought up Urban Meyer's love for Notre Dame without a cue.

Right after saying Meyer is "no question one of the best coaches in the country," he segued into Urban's "dream job," Notre Dame.

"They still got that rumor going down there, Paul, that if he has one more big year, he might be the Notre Dame coach," Spurrier said.

After Finebaum said Notre Dame folks are convinced Meyer will be their next coach as early as next year, Spurrier referred to how he read about Meyer telling someone about "his dream job to coach at Notre Dame," something Meyer told a Miami radio station in December. "He had an opportunity 4-5 years ago, he didn't take it," Spurrier said.

Yes, we know. But will he leave for the Irish? Spurrier is non-committal, but he shed light on the difficulty of staying somewhere too long after winning big.

"It'd be surprising if he left, but who knows?" Spurrier said. "He's accomplished so much. I left after 12 years because I just said 'Hey, I've done enough. Try something else.' He may get to the point where he needs to try something else. Who knows?"

Interesting stuff. Could Spurrier be giving us a true glimpse into Meyer's current thinking? Listen to Spurrier talk about Meyer and Notre Dame here. His comments on the issue are about three-fourths through the interview with Finebaum.

Spurrier also addressed Urban Meyer's comments about ex-Gators being with him or against him, likely a dig at ex-Gators quarterback Shane Matthews, a radio host who has been critical of Florida's offense in the past.

"I think Shane has calmed down his opinion about Florida's pass offense," Spurrier said.

Spurrier said both guys are at fault "a little bit."
"As an alumnus as a fan, you can complain about stuff that happens, but you still have to be behind yoru team," Spurrier said.

I believe Meyer is being genuine with the "dream job" stuff

I think he realizes that being a legend at Florida isn't close to being one at ND, and that he wants to be the guy to do for ND what Holtz did 20 years ago (if Weis doesn't beat him to it, of course). As always when it comes to big-time coaching, the timing will be key. Meyer has said that the Florida job makes sense until his youngest kid is in college, and that's still many years off. But if Weis can't get it done this season and the job comes open, will he be able to wait, not knowing how long it will be until it's available again? It could be the perfect time to leave Florida, with Tebow leaving and possibly with three titles in four years. And he would be walking into an ND job far, far more attractive than in 2004.

It will be interesting to follow. Then again, I'm a polly, so I believe that Weis will succeed.

Something of a Win-Win for Urban.

By keeping the "Dream Job" story out in the open(even if it is Spurrier today), it really messes with ND and Weis's ability to recruit and all the while it doesn't really hurt Urban on the recruiting trail because most people fall into the espn created spin of, "why in the hell would he want to go to Notre Dame?!?" storyline.

How does the story mess with ND's ability to recruit?

This paticular story?

Probably not much. I was talking about the overall effect. Spurrier has just begun to realize he is up against it at South Carolina.

If you think the SEC recruiting efforts against Urban are working then we may have an impasse. Urban is in the best of both worlds right now IMO.

Love him or hate him, Urban has the college football world by the balls and that includes ND fans and ND haters.

$5 says that if Weis is fired and Urban is hired at ND in the next two years, then the ole ball coach "wants" back in in Gainesville.

If anything, Spurrier's trying to impede Urban's recruiting.

I'm more than a little confident that Spurrier (and other SEC coaches) don't just talk about how Urban dreams night and day about Notre Dame on radio programs. They're talking about it in recruits' living rooms too, and the more they can push the storyline, the better it is for them.

Weis' instability could be putting the damper on two programs' recruiting efforts.
