turn and face the strain...

* Haywood left

* hired Alford at RB (after negotiating with one or two others)

* fired Latina

* hired Verducci at OL (after negotiating with Ron Prince for the job)

* fired Oliver

* dallied with Fickell, Stripling & Crennel for DL -- coach still TBD

* shuffled titles on defense: Corwin to Assoc HC, Tenuta to co-DC

* Polian relegated to ST only

* Ianello granted new title

* Bryant Young hired as defensive GA

* did not pursue an OC -- named himself as such

* added "run game coordinator" to Verducci's title

* announced he might call plays from the booth.

Whew. The only guy untouched is Powlus.

What did I miss?

Could someone help here

I have had no time to watch this presser so I have few questions. Is he staying in the booth because of his health or was it indicated this was for some other reason?

He said it's still 50-50 at this point

I got the sense that, if he decided to do it, it's mostly knee-related, but it wouldn't hurt that he liked it so much at the Hawaii Bowl and that he has a guy on the sideline he trusts in Brown.

Thanks, this could be the best of both worlds

Any guesses on DL coach?

by BPH, San Diego, Friday, February 13, 2009, 10:44 (6087 days ago) @ Jay

I think this Randy Melvin character is the most likely choice. He coached with Cleveland last year, so there's a Crennel connection. He coached with the Patriots when Weis was there. He interviewed for the Rams DL job (incidentally, Spags pursuing him is a good endorsement) but he either didn't get it or turned it down. He has coached at Purdue and Illinois, so he has not only college experience, but experience in our region. And he was hired by Zook, so he must at least be a decent recruiter. And he's experienced enough that he could mentor Young.

Sounds like a solid choice to me.

Bryant Young as Grad Assistant, if you want to count it.
