Thoughts from today's presser?

I like the hiring of Brian White from Maryland, if only for the fact that he was the recruiting coordinator at Hargrave Military Academy. Also, his experience in Maryland's offense can't hurt-- Weis and Friedgen have similar philosophies.

As far as the other stuff--
DL coach next week- does this rule out Crennel?
And-
Tenuta calling the plays in '09
Brown bumped up in title
Tenuta bumped in title
Is this really that different from what we were doing last year? It just seems that now they have the titles to go along with the duties.
Spesh, on Tenuta
by scriptcomesfirst , Friday, February 13, 2009, 12:51 (6087 days ago) @ Spesh
I think Busco and I got the same impression from him last year at the coaches clinic... namely what you said, he is not interested in being a head coach and thinks Notre Dame, done right, is the biggest stage to prove his theories of defensive football. Being a head coach would take him too far away from the teaching aspect he craves IMO.
Now, a question for those smarter than me about defensive scheming... is there a significant gap between the kind of players we are/have been recruiting and the personnel necessary to make the 4-3 dominated schemes work?
Also, and I guess I would direct this at Angel and others closer to the situation, do you think the reassignment of responsibilities is sitting well with the incumbents on the staff?

Polian is listed only as Special Teams coordinator. Was he listed as an Assistant LB coach last year?
I believe he was, yes

Brown and Tenuta.
by River, Hell of the Upside Down Sinners, Friday, February 13, 2009, 09:24 (6087 days ago) @ Spesh
My theory and I have seen bits and pieces of it throughout a few other posts.
First and foremost this probably means Weis is gonna coach from the booth this season and Brown will be the field coach. While giving Tenuta control of the Defense with Brown able to mix in while keeping a hand on the pulse of the entire team on the field. Smart move IMO if all the coaches involved are on board.
Secondly, I think it means that Weis expects Brown to be hired after this upcoming season as a HC. Provided the season plays out at decent expectations I think that makes Brown a hot commodity and deservedly so, IMO.
Lastly, and this may be the only point that doesn't make you say, "no shit, Sherlock", is that Tenuta likes ND, wants to stay, and realizes that he is a DC not HC material. Outside of the NFL calling or a fallout with Weis it would not surprise me to see Tenuta here for quite some time provided Weis gets this thing turned around this year.
Agreed about Weis headed for the booth.
by MattG, Friday, February 13, 2009, 10:10 (6087 days ago) @ River
"50-50" is probably more like 100%. If he's not going up there, why even raise the issue now?
any other bullet points from the presser?

who else thinks this was the Brian White
by Jay , San Diego, Friday, February 13, 2009, 09:45 (6087 days ago) @ NDinVA
they were talking about all along? (Not the guy who was rumored, then hired by Urban as an assistant?)
Well, that makes a whole lot more sense...
by BPH, San Diego, Friday, February 13, 2009, 10:35 (6087 days ago) @ Jay
than some rumor that Weis was actually going to bring the other Brian White in as OC. It's obvious that Weis was going to be the OC all along.
I am disappointed that the rumor of Ianello to QB coach/Powlus to administrative position/new WRs coach didn't come to pass. I'm just not sold on Powlus as a quality assistant.

by NDinVA, Friday, February 13, 2009, 09:22 (6087 days ago) @ Jay
Corwin is now apparently "second in command" of the entire team.
Luke Schmidt is on medical scholarship. Football career is over.
Jashad Gaines not expected back.
Weis not sure if he'll call plays from the booth or sideline. 50-50.
Probably more 4-3 than 3-4, especially with Tenuta calling plays.
DL coach expected shortly. One week
Apparently , no change in S&C coach. "Reuben is the expert".
Corwin as "second in command"
by Mike, Friday, February 13, 2009, 09:24 (6087 days ago) @ NDinVA
Maybe Corwin will end up being the de facto head coach - the guy on the sidelines overseeing things and firing people up while Weis and Tenuta call plays from the booth.
anything official on 5th years?

by ReginaldVelJohnson , Friday, February 13, 2009, 12:55 (6087 days ago) @ PaulM
I was hoping (and assuming) he'd be back for his 5th year. We have a lot of talented people in the secondary, but they will be well served playing with Kyle for another year, hopefully with his discipline and effort rubbing off.
Don't know.

that stinks about Luke Schmidt
by Jay , San Diego, Friday, February 13, 2009, 09:23 (6087 days ago) @ NDinVA
He could just never get out of the starting gate without something going wrong.
Spesh, Weis said that Crennell will not be coming.
by NDinVA, Friday, February 13, 2009, 09:05 (6088 days ago) @ Spesh
I didn't see or hear the presser myself, so that's someone elses interpretation of what Weis said.

I hope Corwin is happy with everything
by Jay , San Diego, Friday, February 13, 2009, 08:51 (6088 days ago) @ Spesh
It sure looks like a demotion on its face.
perhaps
by Spesh
, Los Angeles, Friday, February 13, 2009, 09:10 (6087 days ago) @ Jay
but I don't think Corwin will be here next year anyway. He's either interviewing or getting offers for interviews for HC positions at smaller schools. A year as the Associate HC, given Charlie's health condition, is only going to help prepare him more to be a HC somewhere else.
It's certainly a demotion in title, but do we know if it's a demotion in duties? Last year's defense seemed all Tenuta, all the time.
This sounds about right.
by Pete, Friday, February 13, 2009, 09:13 (6087 days ago) @ Spesh
If Charlie is heading up to the booth, this allows Corwin to basically have an open audition in the role of the head coach for the season. I see all this shaking out with Weis & Tenuta up in the booth worrying about schematics, while Corwin & Co. handle the personnel and on the field matters.
It seems a little convoluted and certainly unorthodox, but it might work. Certainly seems to be an effort to maximize everybody's talents. Let's just hope it's not the coaching version of Wildcat: Navy Game Edition.
Let's not forget about Chalie's knees.
by Bingo , Fort Wayne, IN, Friday, February 13, 2009, 09:21 (6087 days ago) @ Pete
He may be thinking that coaching from the booth this year is good idea, with full intention of returning to the sidelines in 2010. This move might not be a demotion of anyone. It could be that the situation dictates that Weis makes some adjustments. Maybe he thought that Brown would be better suited for the role of "sideline coach" then Tenuta. I agree with most that either Brown, or Tenuta is gone after this year.
What happens in this scenario?
by BPH, San Diego, Friday, February 13, 2009, 10:30 (6087 days ago) @ Bingo
Weis moves up to the booth for this season. Brown is the acting head coach on the sideline. The move works splendidly. Weis returns to being a robot genius. Brown fires up the troops like he's Mike Tomlin. We go 12-1 and win a BCS bowl.
But now Weis is healthy. Can he really continue to justify being a head coach who doesn't coach from the sideline? If he comes back down, what does that mean for the play-calling?
And Brown is too good in his new role. He gets hired as a head coach at a non-BCS school. So who becomes our fiery leader and motivator?
another more immediate scenario
by Jay , San Diego, Friday, February 13, 2009, 10:33 (6087 days ago) @ BPH
I bet this comes up this season.
Scenario: There's two minutes left in the game and we just got the ball back, down by 4 points. We go hurry-up, no huddle.
How the hell does Charlie direct his quarterback from way up in the booth?
How quickly can we get Weis from booth to field?
by Pete, Friday, February 13, 2009, 10:37 (6087 days ago) @ Jay
Have they timed it? Maybe they could install some sort of slide-like apparatus.

And
by Gator77, Friday, February 13, 2009, 09:30 (6087 days ago) @ Bingo
It's entirely possible that the decision on where CW is in the fall is not in his hands. If you saw him at the last presser he had great difficulty moving. And this is before the next operation on the other knee.
It is possible that the doctors or ND's risk management department or some combo may dictate that he not be near the field. And this may hold true for spring practice as well.
I honestly don't think he'll be on the field in the fall either by his choice or someone else's.
great point
by Jay , San Diego, Friday, February 13, 2009, 09:31 (6087 days ago) @ Gator77
You have to wonder, with Swarbrick in charge, how much of the offseason changes were dictated to Charlie.

It certainly seems like a demotion
by Romulox, Friday, February 13, 2009, 09:08 (6087 days ago) @ Jay
but if the rumors about Charlie coaching from the booth turn out to be true (I'm not sure they are), then I could definitely see this as a promotion. Charlie may ask him to run the sideline on gamedays while pumping up the defense, while also helping to draft the defensive game plan during the week.
Who would be the lead offensive coach on the sidelines if Charlie were to stay in the booth?
Based on title, Ianello

Yes it does.
by San Pedro , More than 100 feet from Bob Davies, Friday, February 13, 2009, 08:57 (6088 days ago) @ Jay
I guess I don't understand what merited the seeming demotion. It kind of goes agains the whole plan that's been laid out for Corwin. If he's not going to call plays and run the defense, why did he leave the pros?
Could be more to do with keeping Tenuta than
by Pete, Friday, February 13, 2009, 09:01 (6088 days ago) @ San Pedro
anything involving Brown. I wonder if Brown is still going to be the top defensive guy in practice, while Tenuta focuses more on gameday scheming.
As an aside, is Charlie seriously considering coaching from the booth? It might be a great move for him if the Hawaii game is any indication, but it doesn't do a whole lot to dispense of the notion that he's the world's highest paid offensive coordinator.
It mimics the setup in NE with him and Belichick
by Samari, Bahston, Friday, February 13, 2009, 09:09 (6087 days ago) @ Pete
Bill was a defensive guy and the defense was his baby. He trusted Weis enough to give him a lot of latitude to do what he needed on the offense. As long as Corwin is happy being the heart of the defense while Tenuta's the brains, I'm happy.
I think you might be right
by Jay , San Diego, Friday, February 13, 2009, 09:05 (6088 days ago) @ Pete
Somehow I don't expect both of them to be here next season.
